8 Things To Do To Avoid A Cold Or Flu
by Kim Neyer | More from this Blogger
You've likely been bombarded with news stories and advice about H1N1 lately. It's important to remember that the way you prevent H1N1 is the same way you prevent any cold or flu. Prevention is key, and often times it involves a little common sense, like washing your hands, for example. Pregnancy is hard enough without having to deal with illness. Take care of yourself and your baby by doing everything you can to prevent a cold or flu.
1. Shots
Talk to your doctor about whether you are a good candidate for a flu vaccine. Get the facts from your doctor, rather than from media hype or forums, on whether a flu shot would benefit you and your family.
2. Sleep
Sleep deprivation really increases your chances of falling ill. I know it's hard to sleep when you're pregnant, sometimes. Invest in a great body pillow! Try to get at least eight hours per night.
3. Get Your Vitamin D
Get a few minutes of direct sun every day (without the SPF) and your body will produce all the vitamin D you need. You can also take a supplement if you are unable to get in the sun. You need 1000 IU each day. Check your bottle of prenatals and talk to your OB/GYN or midwife before starting a new supplement.
4. Bundle Up
Keeping your body warm during the winter chill helps your body fight and prevent illness.
5. Exercise
Light exercise will help your immune system. It's good for your baby, too! As always, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
6. Wash Up
Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. This one is important! If you can't get to a sink, use hand sanitizing gel or wipes.
7. Eat Healthy
You should be doing this already if you are pregnant!
8. Avoid Sick People
Avoid crowded areas and hospital waiting rooms where germs spread like wild fire. Carry sanitizing wipes with you and wipe down shopping cart handles and similar surfaces before using them.
