Are Fireworks Too Loud For Baby?

This coming weekend my husband will be helping a friend set up fireworks for the Fourth of July, which is quickly approaching! They have built a special board that will allow them to ignite the fuses remotely, eliminating any worries of my husband blowing off his hand while lighting hazardous explosives. It’s an annual tradition to cook out and watch the display on a farm outside the city. I’m looking forward to celebrating this fourth as my first! First fourth as a mom, that is! Of course, my son and I will be watching the fireworks from inside the car … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

Seeking Silence

Sometimes ideas come from the strangest places. Sometimes ideas stem from the intentional misuse of items. Sometimes in order to succeed you’ve got to take drastic steps. A couple of weeks ago I joked about buying some sort of headphone that might block out the noise. Turns out those types of headphones are kind of expensive. Turns out that my father-in-law (and my brother’s father-in-law) are into guns. Turns out people who use guns with any great regularity also protect their ears. Turns out that these types of headphones aren’t very expensive at all. And guess what… this helps me … Continue reading

Product Review: Sound Beginnings

The sound of the electric beater would make my son startle when he was in the womb. The swell of a hymn on Sunday morning would seem to send him into a happy dance, making my stomach look like a bag of popcorn in the microwave. Daddy’s voice would almost always earn a kick or a punch. It was pretty clear he could hear us and I would experiment with different sounds to see what he would do. Sometimes I would sing or listen to music with a driving beat just to see how much I could get him to … Continue reading

It’s High Anxiety Season Again!

Here in the States, the Fourth of July (and the weeks surrounding) is a high anxiety time for pets — thanks to the fireworks. They’ve been setting off fireworks in my neighborhood for at least a week now, with the big day itself still to come. My dogs have been relatively mellow about the firecrackers so far — despite a bad experience in the past where they were thrown at us while we were walking. Perked ears, a little bit of barking and running to the windows… definitely not as bad as it has been. But for some pets, fireworks … Continue reading

Preparing for the Storm

When you live in the woods, you have to be prepared. Gustav and Hanna have been in the news lately, as everyone pays close attention to the hurricane and severe storm watches and warnings. I have been no exception. The little weather alert has been popping up on my browser for the last two days, warning me of severe storms with high winds and possible flooding in my area. While I am not too concerned that we will find ourselves in a situation that requires evacuation, I still need to pay attention to the weather reports, especially because of those … Continue reading
