Baby Shower Games

Whether you are planning a shower or having one thrown in your honor, you will probably be playing some games. Shower games are a tradition at most baby showers. Even if you think they are corny and out of date, you will want to join in the fun. Here are some common games played at showers I have attended over the years.

Baby Shower Charades: Divide guests into two teams for this game. Write baby related things on slips of paper and place these in a bowl. Some examples include changing a diaper, taking the baby to the doctor, giving the baby a bath and putting baby in a car seat. Guests pull a paper out of the bowl and act out the scene described on the paper. The teams get points based on figuring out the charade.

Purchase some sticker type name tags and write a word related to babies. Some examples include diapers, baby, pacifier, breastfeeding, stroller, car seat, etc. Give each guest a name tag and have the guests wear the tags. The guest can't say the word that is on their tag for the entire shower. If a guest says the word on her tag, the person who hears it gets to take the tag. As guests collect the tags, they can't say any of the words on the tags they are wearing. The person with the most tags at the end of the shower wins a prize.

Who's that baby? Have each guest bring a picture of themselves as a baby. Put the pictures on a bulletin board and number the pictures. Give each guest a sheet of paper and have them write the name of the person next to the number of the baby picture they think is that person. The guest who has the most correct answers wins!

This last idea is not really a game, but a really sweet idea. Have each guest write a special message in a journal for the parents to be. These can be messages of love or parenting advice. The parents get to keep the journal as a special memento of the shower.

Another idea is to create a scrapbook page for the parents. A digital camera can be used to take pictures of the guest with the mother to be or the new mommy opening the gift given by each guest. Provide scrapbook pages and embellishments for the guests to decorate the pages. When they are finished, put them together in a scrapbook for the parents to keep.

For my first shower, I spent hours and hours designing a baby shower game "booklet" that I was intensely proud of - and no one seemed to notice how cool it was but me. I put a lot of thought into it, but it wasn't the hit I thought it would be.

We decided not to have any shower games the second time, and it was very successful. I find that adults tend to get very bored playing games at showers, so we decided to have a short co-ed shower and serve a classy, adult menu. Everyone brought their significant others, ate, had dessert as we opened gifts, chatted a bit during coffee and then left. It was a public hall, otherwise we had considered even serving cocktails. We had many positive remarks on the shower, such as that they were pleased it wasn't boring or juvenile as most showers they had been to were! LOL
