Baby Products You Don’t Need

If you are expecting your first child, you may be in the process of creating a baby registry. By now, you have probably noticed that there are so many baby products out there. You are also probably wondering which ones you really need and which you could do without. This is, of course, a matter of personal opinion. The following items are things that I think most people will be just fine without. They are items that I either did not register for or never bought after either of my sons were born. A baby bathtub was given to me, … Continue reading

Why Exercise During Pregnancy

Our bodies were designed to be exercised. Our muscles are meant to be toned and our hormones depend on aerobic movement to stay in balance. Without exercise our metabolisms slow and our immune systems become weakened. Exercise is important and should play a significant role in our daily lives. The need for exercise does not go away with pregnancy, rather the need is increased. Countless studies have shown the health benefits of exercise for both mother and baby. Exercise relieves and prevents aches and pains that are common during pregnancy, which giving the mother a surge in endorphins giving her … Continue reading

Exercise and the Single Mother

It’s amazing the toll that pregnancy can take on our bodies. Before I had my son I could eat anything I wanted and it never showed. I could eat ice cream all day every day if I wanted and no one would know the difference. After my son was born reality set in. My metabolism just wasn’t what it used to be, my body would never be the same again. I didn’t have a lot of trouble with the initial baby weight coming off, but no matter what I did my body just didn’t look the same anymore. Pregnancy had … Continue reading

Dad’s Depression has an Impact on Baby

When we discuss postpartum depression, we automatically think of moms suffering from this illness. But a recent study showed that many dads may experience depression after a new baby is born. And this study also revealed that dad’s depression can have major ramification of your children. There appears to be a direct correlation between dad’s depression and spanking. The study showed that 40 percent of depressed dads have spanked their one year old child, compared to only 13 percent of dads that are not suffering. These results are alarming, as children this young most likely will not make the connection … Continue reading

The Pressure to Lose Baby Weight

The average woman gains 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. Much of this weight is lost after the baby is born, and the rest is slowly lost during the first 3-6 months. This is completely normal. It seems that along with the Hollywood trend of having babies (and publicizing it) has come the trend of losing the baby weight in just a few weeks. I remember looking at a picture of Jessica Alba a few weeks after she had her daughter and I was shocked to see she looked the same, if not better, than she did before she ever got pregnant. … Continue reading

Baby Belly Days

Certain days in my life can provoke more thought and emotion than others. This is today. Before I had my baby years ago, I was quite thin. I was also younger and taller. I wore a size 8, which is like the equivalent now to about a size 4. I felt pretty good about myself. I discovered that soon my belly would be expanding and I was ecstatic. I had been waiting for what seemed like forever to me. I was very careful about what I ate. I ate healthy, exercised and made sure that I did not gain too … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Can Too Much Exercise Make Your Milk Sour?

Several have posed this question to me recently so I thought I would take some time today in the baby blog to answer it. It used to be that conventional wisdom told mothers not to exercise while breastfeeding. When you exercise your body increases the production of lactic acid which would make your milk taste sour to the baby and would either upset her stomach or cause her to reject it. Current research does not really support this idea. The most current research that I’m aware of (and here’s where I admit that I haven’t seen anything on this particular … Continue reading

Celebrity Baby Talk

Babies, babies, babies. They are the talk of Tinseltown. From Jennifer Lopez’s rumored pregnancy with twins (announce you’re pregnant already) to Nicole Richie’s burgeoning baby bump to Halle Berry’s upcoming appearance on Oprah’s show to spill the beans on her new baby belly. And, then there’s Brooke Shields. The mom of two—-daughters, Rowan, 4, and Grier, 1—-says she is ready for baby No.3. “I would love it,” Shields recently told reporters at a publicity event. “I might have to bind and gag my husband [Chris Henchy] because I think he’s happy with the girls he has in his life, but … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review June 2 – June 8

Is it Saturday already? This has been a crazy week and our plans were sidetracked hard because the daughter was sick all week. She suffered from a high fever for five days and now she has a full-fledged head cold. Hopefully next week will see us back out on our bikes and swimming again. In the meanwhile, here is our week in review: Saturday, June 2 Does Becoming a Parent Means Becoming Sedentary? Studies suggest that with the shifting priorities and lack of sleep after a baby is born, parents are less likely to exercise than they were before they … Continue reading
