Why you Should Read to your Baby

Do you read to your baby? The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new guidelines that recommend that parents read to their newborn infants. Some parents may not be doing that because it never occurred to them that babies benefit from being read to. There are some very good reasons for parents to read to their babies and young children! The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that parents who read to their children nurture not only their children’s literary skills, but also much more. They have put together some easy to read information that points out the benefits that come … Continue reading

Are Two Naps for Baby Cramping Your Style?

While to many people it might seem ideal to have your baby take two naps a day, it can also cramp you style a little bit. And, by style, I don’t mean your actual style, but I mean that it can make outside activities, playdates, errands, and chores a little bit difficult. I have said before that I love schedules. But, when babies take two naps a day, that makes the schedule very tight. You have a couple of hours to run errands or do outside activities in the morning, a couple in the afternoon, and then a few in … Continue reading

Ever Dreamed of a Personal Shopper for Your Baby?

So, I love to scrapbook and used to subscribe to a monthly scrapbook kit each month that was delivered right to my door. I remember the excitement of getting that box and opening it and seeing all my new goodies. Well, another company has started a similar concept for children. They are called Citrus Lane. Rather than hunting for the latest and coolest new baby products, they do it for you, put them together in kits and deliver them right to your door. I love this idea! The cost is only $25 (and free shipping) and you get anywhere from … Continue reading

Make Your Own Crinkle Baby Toys

My six month old is like your typical six month old. He loves (or is obsessed with) anything crinkly. Yes, I have been known to entertain him by throwing a plastic shopping bag his way (under intense supervision, of course) so that he will be happy. I’m afraid though, that I’m creating a monster! Today, when I was putting away the groceries, he was lunging at the counter while in my arms. I realized he was lunging for my grocery sacks sitting on the counter. Oops! He also loves plastic in any form, really. If it crinkles, he is entertained … Continue reading

Where is the love?

(“Gimme a hug, slug!”) All things being equal, I much rather be hugged than hit. You’d think this would be a universally accepted norm, but, you know, there’s always someone who has to be the exception. Or, in this case, some school. A few weeks ago, the halls of Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School in New Jersey became no-hugging zones. According to news reports, more than 900 students were given direct orders from their principal that Matawan-Aberdeen was officially a “no hugging school” following “incidents of unsuitable, physical interactions.” Huh? What the heck are “incidents of unsuitable, physical interactions?” Are we talking … Continue reading

Oh Baby, Baby!

Twins! One of the moms from my scrapbooking group recently gave birth to healthy twin girls. I finally got to meet them last week. They are much tinier than I had anticipated, but are still cute as can be. Despite being overwhelmed by the constant feedings and diaper changing, the twins’ mom is doing something I would never consider attempting three weeks post partum: She’s piecing together the twins’ first scrapbook. She received a ton of baby-themed scrapbooking supplies during her shower, but I didn’t think she would get crafting so soon after giving birth. Apparently, she doesn’t want to … Continue reading

Popular Baby Names Reveal Popular Culture

Genealogists can learn quite a bit from the first names of their ancestors. Sometimes, a first name can give you clues about the heritage of an ancestor. There are many families who have certain names that are handed down from one generation to another one. Often, though, parents are inspired by the popular culture when they name their babies. A first name can give a glimpse into what your ancestor’s social world was like. There is now a list of the most popular baby names for 2010, for both boys and girls, which comes from data compiled by the Social … Continue reading

Snapping Baby’s First Easter

My cousin’s son is celebrating his first Easter tomorrow, and knowing his snap happy parents, the kid will likely be blind by Monday. Hopefully, it will be sunny so they won’t need to use their camera’s flash. Regardless of your subject’s age it’s always better to use natural light rather than artificial, though with babies this rule is even more important due to their delicate features. When snapping Easter photos of your newborn aim for an early morning or late afternoon session. These times are known as the “golden hours” and are best for natural light photography. Consider dressing your … Continue reading

My Last Baby

My husband and I thought that we were done having children after the birth of our two girls. We were using protection and had been discussing permanent options for quite awhile. Then, last March, a surprise came, or perhaps more to the point, it didn’t come. It took me quite a few days after I took the pregnancy test before I could even tell my husband, and when I did, it didn’t go well. But, the facts were the facts, and we were having another baby, whether we had planned on it or not. Throughout the whole pregnancy, I sort … Continue reading
