Paul Ryan Brings Up Paid Parental Leave

Paul Ryan recently became Speaker of the House of Representatives. One of the conditions he established as a requirement for him taking the position equates to what many might consider to be “work/life” balance. Others see it as a sign that paid parental leave is important. Paul Ryan is a Republican who represents Wisconsin. Paul Ryan ran as Vice President to Mitt Romney in the 2012 Presidential election. He is in his mid-40’s. His immediate family includes his wife, a daughter, and two sons. The children are school-age. When Paul Ryan was asked to consider becoming Speaker of the House, … Continue reading

Bring On the Borders

Maybe it’s the time of year, or perhaps, it’s because I saw them used in a prize-winning layout. Regardless of the reason, I’ve been adding garlands, banners and borders on nearly all of my page designs this fall. The fun embellishments are an easy way to spice up an otherwise boring layout. What’s more, scrapbooking manufacturers are making it easier to add them to page designs by rolling out banners and borders in every theme imaginable. Festive holiday banners are readily available online and in stores, as are colorful borders featuring everything from baby to zoo themes. Making Memories has … Continue reading

Labor of Fun

Labor Day is such a bittersweet holiday for me. Whereas I love the extra day of play, I hate that the weekend is the unofficial farewell to summer. Still, there’s no better way to bid the season goodbye than with an end of the summer bash for all your family and friends. Picnics: Whether you are entertaining a small group or a huge clan, picnics are a great outdoor activity. Grab your checkered tablecloth and plan a seasonal menu complete with fried chicken, watermelon, potato salad, grilled corn, and lemonade. Don’t forget to bring along some sports equipment to work … Continue reading

Deal With Those Things You Do Not Use

There are things that you buy that you love, and you use them until they are all used up (if they are consumables) or all worn out if they are things like clothes or shoes. Then there are those things that you may not want to talk about. Things that you have bought that you do not use, or that you never wear. Things that cost you money, things that are just sort of in your home (or a storage unit) taking up space. This is not a topic that people enjoy discussing because no one wants to admit to … Continue reading

Are You Married to a Bad Dad?

To answer the question we must first define “bad.” Are we talking Alec Baldwin bad, Jon Gosselin bad, Mel Gibson bad or “Slumdog Millionaire” dad bad? Or, do you lump your child’s co-parent into the “bad” category due to his lack of participation in the daily upbringing of the child he clearly participated in conceiving? If you selected the latter, then you might be interested in the results of a new study that examines the gap between genders when it comes to “unpaid economy” or what us lay folk refer to as the daily grind of housework and childcare. Thoughts on a Successful Labor and Delivery

How do you define a “successful” birth? Clearly, success can only be defined on an individual level, since every woman’s ideal birth is different. But ultimately, a successful labor and delivery is one that avoids all unnecessary or unwanted interventions and complications, while still adhering to the mother’s wishes as closely as possible, and results in both a healthy mother and baby. The surrounding details of a successful birth vary from case to case. For a woman who desires an epidural, getting total and complete pain relief is success. As you may know, epidurals don’t always work the way they … Continue reading

Waiting for Labor

One of my friends is very close to delivery. We were talking the other night about signs of impending labor and I began to reflect on my own experience. Every woman’s story is different, but I have noticed that first babies tend to take their sweet time getting ready. I delivered on a Monday, but my contractions started on the Wednesday prior. It gets stressful when you can’t figure out whether you’re experiencing the real thing or simply false labor. After all, there’s nothing false about false labor. It still hurts, it just doesn’t lead to any progress. Unless you’ve … Continue reading
