Can You Really Get Pregnant on Vacation?

by Pattie Hughes | More from this Blogger

When we were trying to conceive our first baby, people often suggested we take a vacation. Personally, I thought they were out of their minds. What on earth did a vacation have to do with having a baby? As it turns out, it can make a difference.

Stress has been shown to negatively affect fertility. The stress of daily life combined with trying to get pregnant can lower your chances of conception. Vacations offer stress reduction and a break from the daily grind.

The travel industry has taken notice of studies that show vacations can work. Some are now offering "Procreation Vacations" marketed to couples trying to conceive a baby. These packages offer herbal concoctions and spa treatments to help couples relax and boost fertility. For many couples, the trips appear to help.

You need to approach your trip in the right state of mind. Relaxation is important, so you can't get stressed thinking about conceiving. While the trip will be planned around ovulation, it has to be about more than conception.

Figure out when you will go and where you want to travel. You will want to go around the time of ovulation. Arriving at your destination a few days in advance will give you time to relax and unwind. When the day arrives, you will feel relaxed in body and mind.

Plan your trip for wherever you will feel the most relaxed. Many couples escape to the islands to bask in the sun and get a break from the bitter cold. A quiet mountain retreat is romantic and puts you in touch with nature. Consider where you will feel most relaxed and comfortable.

Whether you conceive on your trip or not, you will reap the benefits. You will return home relaxed and ready to tackle another cycle. Your marriage will be strengthened as a result of the time spent relaxing and enjoying each other's company.
