Deciding Where to Give Birth

When you got pregnant, you took care to choose a prenatal health care provider or team of providers that you could trust to provide the best care for you and your baby throughout your pregnancy. As the time for baby’s arrival draws near, you may be faced with another major health care decision – where to give birth. For example, you may be working with midwives and preparing for a home birth until something happens late in the pregnancy which requires that your care be transferred to a hospital. That just happened to me. You could also be planning to … Continue reading

Product Review: Hallmark Birth Announcements

Last week I had the opportunity to test out Hallmark’s new Personalized Baby Announcements. According to Hallmark, all you have to do is visit Hallmark.com/baby, pick your favorite design, and customize the announcement with your baby’s photo and your personal message. You’re supposed to be able to finish your announcements in the amount of time it takes for your baby to take a nap, with time to spare. To put the service to the test, I enlisted the help of a friend, Danielle, who recently had a baby boy. The selection of templates to choose from was pretty good. The … Continue reading

Don’t Give Your Children Everything

Hands up all those parents who want their children to have a better life than they did? This seems to be one of the most universal desires of parents the world over. It’s natural to want your child to have a better education, better nutrition, indeed better everything. We want to provide the very best start in life for our child. What parent wouldn’t? However, it pays to be very discerning when deciding what exactly you mean by “better.” Today’s children seem to have more toys and more extracurricular choices than we had as children. Our own parents no doubt … Continue reading

More on King Middle’s Decision to Give out Birth Control

Previously, I discussed what I had discovered about King Middle School in Portland deciding to allow the clinic to give out birth control pills and patches to its students. It seems that not everyone in the town is as happy with the decision as the school officials. The vote by the board of education was won with a 7 to 2 win. The decision was to allow the city ran clinic that is located on the school grounds to prescribe birth control pills and patches to the students. The students may not be seen or treated by the clinic unless … Continue reading

How Water Helped Me Achieve a Natural Childbirth

I was able to have a natural childbirth experience with my first child. Though my labor lasted about fourteen hours, I never felt as though the pain was unbearable or that I needed any medication to take off the edge of the contractions. However, labor with my second child was a different story. Almost from the start, labor seemed more intense and painful than my first one had been. I was in for my check up the afternoon I went into labor and my doctor told me that I was already four centimeters dilated. I was so excited and thought … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Vitamin D Supplements & Breastfeeding

Question: I have heard that you are supposed to give your baby Vitamin D supplements if they are breastfeeding. I am not sure how I feel about this, but I am also concerned about rickets. I also follow a vegan diet. What is your opinion on giving vitamin supplements to exclusively breastfed babies? I have to say that I rarely go against the advice of my pediatrician. I think she’s fantastic and I trust her. However, I am still the parent, and I still have the right to decide what is best for my child. Supplementing our babies with vitamins … Continue reading

Things You May Not Know About C Sections

Whether you are planning a c – section or not, there is always the possibility that you could end up delivering that way. My second son, Blake, arrived via c – section after he began to show signs of stress during delivery. I had not been planning a c – section and knew next to nothing about it. There was no real time to anticipate it or become afraid, because I was moved out of my room and into the operating room with barely any time to think. Fortunately, the operation went well and both Blake and I recovered quickly. … Continue reading

Weaning to Formula-Part 3

I’ve always known that my hormones in general were through the roof. I am a woman, and I am hormonal! But, in all seriousness, this last pregnancy, and recent birth of my son have put me through the ups and downs of motherhood like I never thought possible. This experience of deciding whether or not to stop breastfeeding due to the food sensitivities my child is suffering through has been a heart-wrenching one to say the least. I now understand better than ever when people say it is a personal choice. Because, this time around, I did have to make … Continue reading

Bed Rest

If you are in your first trimester and feeling really tired, you may be secretly hoping that one day your prenatal care provider will tell you that you have got to take it easy, and will prescribe bed rest. As nice as it sounds, bed rest is not all that great – and not all that practical either, especially if you already have a little one running around the house. On average, one out of every five mothers will be prescribed bed rest during her pregnancy for any one of a number of reasons. Bed rest can mean anything from … Continue reading

Pregnant or Trying to Get Pregnant? There’s an App For That

Since there’s an app for almost everything these days, it should come as no surprise that there are plenty of apps out there that have been designed for pregnant women. I’ve got an Android smartphone, so these are Android apps. Many of these apps have Apple counterparts that you can find by searching in iTunes. Here are descriptions of three free apps that I think might come in handy during your pregnancy. Contraction Timer by L-J-Holmes is an app whose title leaves nothing to the imagination. When you start to experience contractions, it is important that you time them so … Continue reading
