Evening Primrose Oil and Trying to Conceive

by Pattie Hughes | More from this Blogger

Evening Primrose Oil is an herbal supplement that is believed to have benefits for infertility, among many other uses. Evening Primrose Oil contains Gamma Linolenic Acid, an Omega 6 fatty acid. This ingredient is the key to the benefits of this supplement for fertility.

Evening Primrose Oil is said to have benefits for women trying to conceive a baby. One of the benefits is that it helps produce cervical mucous that is right for conception. This helps the sperm live longer and reach the egg.

Cervical mucous is important for conception. If you are in treatment for infertility, you have likely had testing that checked the cervical mucous. If it is not clear and stretchy, the mucous can be a hostile environment for the sperm. This can prevent conception.

If you plan to use Evening Primrose Oil, it is important that you use it correctly. Evening Primrose Oil is not safe during pregnancy. It can case uterine contractions when taken by pregnant women. Using it for conception is safe, but you need to take it at the right time in your cycle.

To be effective, start taking Evening Primrose Oil on the first day of your menstrual cycle. Continue taking it daily from the first day of the cycle up to the time of ovulation. After ovulation, stop taking it for the remainder of that cycle.

If you have been trying to conceive for a while, you are probably charting your cycle. This will make knowing when to stop taking Evening Primrose Oil easier. If you haven't been tracking ovulation because you are just starting out on the road to mommy hood, you will want to start keeping track of your cycle.

You can find Evening Primrose Oil in health food stores, some grocery stores and on the internet. Start with 1500 mg per day.
