Fame and Pregnancy
by Kim Neyer | More from this Blogger
Periodically I scan the media for pregnancy-related news. It usually consists of a few new studies, old advice with a new take, and plenty of celebrity-scandal. Hollywood and everyone watching is so obsessed with celebrity pregnancy.
I'm really glad I am not famous. Have you ever considered the freedom you have in being anonymous? You can go to a drug store and buy a pregnancy test, or ten pregnancy tests, and no one cares. I know this because when I was trying to get pregnant, I bought ten pregnancy tests at the Dollar General, and the cashier didn't even blink an eye. (Dollar tests are just as good as the more expensive tests, by the way, I swear by them!) If my name was Kim Kardashian, however, everyone would be writing about it on the internet. I don't think I'd be able to even glance at the pregnancy tests without someone taking a picture on their cell phone and sending it to TMZ or another celebrity news/gossip source.
Even without standing in the pregnancy test aisle, celebrity women can spark rumors of pregnancy simply by gaining five pounds, standing with poor posture or by wearing loose fitting clothing. How would you like to wake up one morning to find an unflattering photo of yourself plastered all over the internet, with claims that you are expecting?
And then the media hovers over the poor woman throughout her pregnancy. How much weight is she gaining? Is she really going to eat that? What exercise regime is she following? Is she pregnorexic? What is she wearing? What is she having? What does her nursery look like? Pregnant celebrities can't fart without the paparazzi taking a picture of it.
Normal women also have the privilege of taking their time in losing the baby weight post-pregnancy. It seems celebrity women have two choices: hide until they are skinny again, or get back to pre-pregnancy shape in six weeks or less. It's impossible!
I have an idea, how about the media makes a New Year's resolution to stop spreading pregnancy rumors and leave these pregnant celebrities alone. They have enough to worry about! They can also take all the money they were planning on spending on exclusive new baby photos and donate it to young families who really need it. How does that sound?
