Confessions of a Foodie Mom, Week Three

I’m down a pound this week! (For a few days I was worried that I wouldn’t have any weight loss to report!) It’s been a weird couple of weeks—I’ve been in a lot of pain so I haven’t been cooking much, and exercising has been harder. Two things which have made it easier are: exercise, no matter how little, and keeping the fridge stocked with hard-boiled eggs, lots of fruits, and low-fat string cheese. I also like to stock V-8 Juice so I can get some veggie servings even when we run out of salad fixings and baby carrots. In … Continue reading

For some moms, pregnancy means an overhaul when it comes to diet. For others, it’s nothing new. Whether or not healthy foods are part of your regular diet, eating healthy on the go can be tricky, especially in a world where cheap, fast food is available everywhere. When your stomach is growling, fight the urge to pull into the drive through by keeping your purse and car stocked with healthy snacks. Prepare snacks ahead of time, storing them in zippered sandwich bags, ready to grab on your way out the door. Not sure what to bring along? Here are some … Continue reading

Celebrity Moms’ Unique Ways to Get Fit and Inspire Kids

Supermodel Cindy Crawford doesn’t want her daughter to fall into society’s trap of being super skinny, so she employs a simple tactic to encourage 7-year-old Kaia to snack: She goes out of her way to eat ice cream and potato chips in front of her. Does anyone else see the humor in this? Grimaces aside, Crawford is serious about keeping her kids fit and encouraging them to establish healthy body images. The 42-year-old mom recently told reporters that she is determined to keep her daughter from sacrificing her health for her figure, so she goes out of her way to … Continue reading

Money Saving Tips for Single Moms

Setting up a home as a single parent usually means looking for ways to cut costs. I know I had to rethink my budget and make some changes. Even though I was receiving child support, the spending had to change. The first thing I did was determine the type of spending habit I had. For me, I discovered I was a compulsive shopper, buying on whim. To help with this, I began to make specific lists before I headed to the store, which helped me stick to the actual things I needed to buy. I also made changes in the … Continue reading

The No Sugar Diet

On Monday morning, I was chatting with some of the other moms on the soccer field. Our kindergarten kids participate in pee wee soccer two mornings a week. One mom started telling me that with the exception of natural sugar found in fruit and vegetables, she completely gave up sugar six months earlier. As someone who loves to bake and never met a sweet thing I didn’t like, I was both impressed and shocked. I know I need to cut down on my own sugar consumption. While obesity isn’t a problem for me right now, there are so many other … Continue reading
