Getting too Used to the Good Life

We have been without our main car for a week now, and we still have another two weeks to go before we get it back. Meanwhile, we are driving our oldest vehicle, a 1998 SUV, and driving it only when we have to. It has been an adventure. With one car seat and two booster seats in the back, the car is cramped, and someone always seems to wind up with an elbow in the eye or a foot in the back. The air conditioner is loud and noisy and only cools the car if the temperature is below 80 … Continue reading

Getting Enough Rest

When you are pregnant, it is important that you get plenty of sleep. After all, your body is working hard day and night to grow your baby, in addition to performing the other activities that you do every day. In a perfect world, once you became pregnant your schedule and list of obligations would adjust accordingly, providing you with plenty of time to sleep as much as you felt like sleeping. Unfortunately, that is not the case, but there are a few things that you can do to ensure that you get the rest that you need while you are … Continue reading

Getting Hand Me Down Children’s Clothing for Free

Used items can make a difference between having something and not having it or being financially secure versus being greatly in debt. When those used items are hand me downs that you get for free, your financial outlook gets even better. Some of my favorite types of hand me downs are baby and children’s clothing. Because children grow so fast, the clothing is often in great condition and style. Plus, outfitting a kid by buying new can get expensive rather quickly. Times that by the number of kids you have, and things can quickly add up. There are a couple … Continue reading

Pinterest

I have a confession to make, I’m addicted to Pinterest. When I should be writing, or cleaning, or exercising or walking the dogs, I’m pinning instead. I decided to do a search for housekeeping and I can’t believe all the ideas I found! I’m always looking for new ways to organize but I would never have thought to use a paper towel holder to organize ribbons. Or clothes pins to keep track of embroidery thread. Decorating ideas abound as well. Ideas for each holiday and just general decorating ideas. Quick fixes for boring rooms are just a pin a way. … Continue reading

Sometimes It’s Not Enough

Recently I was reminded again of how many tough decisions we have to make as single parents. A friend of mine posted on her Facebook about how guilty she was feeling because her daughter had to have a tooth pulled because she had to keep putting off getting it fixed. As she said, sometimes the decision was between feeding her daughter or going to the dentist. So why does she feel like a bad mom? This woman works hard and takes wonderful care of her children but because their father doesn’t help her there isn’t always money left after the … Continue reading

When Someone’s Best Isn’t Good Enough

It is really hard to let my house go. But I haven’t had much of a choice the past few days. I have been trying to work through a severe flair-up of costochondritis which requires not only anti-inflammatory medication and icing the inflamed areas but rest…lots of rest. So I have tried to recruit my teens and husband to help out. The problem is that I don’t like the way they do it. Well, that isn’t their problem, it is actually mine. My husband was off work one day this week and so that afforded me the opportunity to really … Continue reading

Getting Ready for the Holidays

As October draws to a close it’s time to start thinking about the rest of the holidays. What holidays do you celebrate and how do you celebrate them? At our house Thanksgiving means lots of food and lots of company. December means baking, lots and lots of baking. The beginning of November I start making lists. I figure out what I’m making for each holiday and start cleaning out the pantry to make room for all the stuff I’m going to have to purchase. I make a list of each recipe and then a shopping list, what do I need, … Continue reading

Getting Organized

Whereas I miss spending lazy summer days with my seven-year-old, I have to admit there are some perks to having her out of the house and back in school. If you’ve ever attempted to clean your kids’ rooms while they are in it, then you know what I’m referring to. Try sorting through mountains of old art projects in an attempt to save some and toss the rest, and you know that the task can be akin to Chinese water torture. “You’re throwing that away!” my little Picasso screams each time I try to recycle even the most obscure art … Continue reading
