Getting Pregnant After Birth Control

Many women use birth control for many years before they decide they are ready to have a baby. When they stop the pill, they expect to get pregnant right away. Sometimes that doesn't happen. Women can be very surprised to find that they don't get pregnant right away. After years of trying not to get pregnant, they may expect to have it happen very soon after stopping the pill.

Most doctors will tell you that the birth control pill won't affect your fertility. The message is that you will ovulate within a month or two after stopping the pill. This doesn't always happen. For some women, it can take some time for the hormones in their body to get back to normal and regular ovulation to resume. Other women may have had problems with ovulation prior to going on the pill. These problems will often return after the pill is stopped.

For some women, it can take some time to resume a normal cycle of periods after using the pill. If you are experiencing irregularities with your cycle after stopping the pill, call your doctor and make an appointment. This may be normal, but it's better to be seen and find out for sure.

Depro Provera is a long term birth control option. If you are on Depro Provera and want to get pregnant, it won't happen over night. The hormones are continuously released in your body. The shot is taken every three months to keep the levels sufficient for preventing pregnancy. When you stop taking the shots, it can take a year for your fertility to return to normal.

If you are on birth control and want to get pregnant, you need to realize that it may take many months for your body to return to normal. If you have no period, irregular or heavy periods, call your doctor. If there is a problem, the sooner it is addressed the better for your fertility.

I recently went off the pill mid-cycle, and two days later I got a period that lasted 4 days and was quite heavy. My doctor told me that this is common and that I probably didn't ovulate afterwards. I believe her, but I can't help wondering if there's any chance that I did ovulate. Have you heard of anyone getting pregnant in a similar circumstance?

Yes, it can take months for your cycle to return to normal after being on birth control, which does depend largely on how long you were on it. Give yourself time - say at least six months - to get back on track (or on track for the first time if you haven't been on track before). In the meantime, begin to nourish your body with herbal infusions and a good multivitamin, lots of fruits and veggies, and plenty of pure filtered water. Exercise will also help greatly in normalizing your hormone levels and regulating your cycles. I know what it's like to have difficulty getting pregnant, and at 41 years of age I have a 22-month-old and I'm pregnant with #2 who is due in one month. Hi Pattie. Although it takes a lot of women a while to get pregnant after stopping BC....it can happen right away. 3 of my close friends, and myself, all got pregnant within 2 months of stopping BC (after being on it for more than 6yrs) and each of us had miscarriages....mine was 7wks along and my friends varied from 6-10wks. The Dr told me that after you stop the pill it can take your ovaries a while to "wake up" in a sense, and that could have contributed to our miscarriages. I would advise any women to use a backup method of BC after stopping the pill, for a cycle or 2....just to be safe. I wouldnt wish a m/c on anyone, and if there are certain things we can do to help in somewhat preventing them, i say do it. :-)
