Should You Create A Birth Plan?

Should you create a birth plan?  It can be a helpful tool for making your wishes known both to your healthcare provider and the labor & delivery staff, but it also seems a little silly to plan something like one’s labor: after all, if we could control it, we would all have easy births. When I first heard about birth plans, I decided that they weren’t for me.  I’m a very Type A person; I get stressed if even my silliest of plans get messed up, if they’re ones I’m excited about.  Trying to plan my baby’s birth, and everything … Continue reading

Why I Have A Doula

We’ve written a little bit before about doulas on the site, but we’ve never been able to share personal experiences with one until now.  Back when I first found out I was pregnant, I wanted a midwife but couldn’t find one.  I thought at least I might be able to find a doula, because that would be better than nothing.  I wanted someone, other than my at-times too logical husband, who would definitely be all on my side during labor. It took me a while, and I actually ended up finding a midwife first, but I was able to find … Continue reading

The Rules Of Natural Child Spacing

Whenever someone asks the mother of a newborn baby when she expects to have another child, they should expect to get a dirty look, at the very least. That said, it can be surprising how quickly the memories of even a very painful labor and delivery can fade into the background. Even women who screamed very angry words at their husbands or partners in the delivery room may be happy when, at their six week postpartum visit, their doctor gives them the green light to resume intimate activity. All of these things lead to the question of how soon a … Continue reading

Catholic Network Sues Federal Government Over Birth Control Coverage

A Roman Catholic television network has filed a lawsuit against the federal government. The lawsuit is in response to the requirement that religious oriented hospitals and universities must include coverage for birth control in their employer sponsored health insurance plans. The Catholic Church is opposed to most methods of birth control. EWTN Global Catholic Network is a television network that is based in the United States. It was launched in 1981. The letters stand for “Eternal Word Television Network”. Since its launch, ETWN Global Catholic Network has become the largest religious media network in the world. It transmits programing 24 … Continue reading

Have You Become More Relaxed With Each Child in Parenting?

There is something I have noticed about parents, myself included. It seems that with each child you have, you tend to become more relaxed. Now that can be a good thing but it can also be a negative. I think the day I realized I had become more relaxed by my third child was several years ago at church. I was in a church service, taking advantage of the childcare we have available. Our children get a number and if you saw your child’s number on the screen, it meant you were needed. My number went up. It was for … Continue reading

Catholic Bishops Against Insurance Coverage for Birth Control

Earlier this month, the Institute of Medicine recommended that all forms of birth control, and contraceptive counseling, should be completely covered by health insurance plans. United States Catholic bishops and health experts are displeased about this suggestion. One of the regulations that has taken place in regards to health care reform involves preventative care. All health insurance companies are required to cover the cost of everything that is considered preventative care, without charging customers for co-pays, or deductibles. There has been some debate as to whether or not certain kinds of women’s health care counted as preventative care. Specifically, there … Continue reading

Sharing Birth Stories: Yea or Nay?

My friend recently posted all the details of her 39-hour labor on a website run by actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake! What is the world coming to? Seriously. Apparently, Ricki Lake has an online community designed to allow moms to share their birthing experiences. It’s called MyBestBirth.com and it thrives on women revealing every gory detail involved in the labor and delivery process. The site also features information about pregnancy, natural birth and holistic parenting. Personally, I’m not a big fan of birthing stories. Whereas I appreciate that some moms’ stories contain extremely helpful information, I get … Continue reading

Birthing Moms Go Glam for Facebook

I am not on Facebook, and don’t have any plans to create an account. This, of course, means I am out of the loop about certain events and incidents, especially since I have a number of friends who communicate exclusively via Facebook. Prime example: One of my childhood friends from Hawaii recently gave birth to a baby boy. Whereas I heard (via telephone) from another friend that my pal had a natural birth and the baby was in good health, I had no clue what Junior and his mom looked like post-birth because I was not able to view the … Continue reading

When Should You Choose Your Birth Control?

If you’ve decided to wait to become sexually active until you’re married, and your wedding date is approaching, you may have questions about birth control. Many couples choose to wait a little while before starting their families. Perhaps they want to finish school, or get settled in their new homes—maybe they want time to get to know each other as husband and wife before they become mother and father. It may be that you aren’t sure if parenthood is right for you. Whatever your reasoning, you have questions, and they need to be answered. But when? The sooner the better. … Continue reading

The Birth of My Second Child-It’s a Boy!!, Part II

If you missed part I of this story, go here. When we got to the hospital, I was trying to be strong. I didn’t want my husband to put me in a wheelchair. I wanted to walk by myself. Silly me. I must have looked ridiculous as every contraction came on and I had to stop walking and bend over. My husband was worried. I thought about my first experience, and thought I still had a ways to go. When they finally got me into the room, and checked me, lo and behold I was at a 5 already! YAHOO!! … Continue reading
