Including Children in Home Births

One reason some women choose to give birth at home is the ability to have other family members present. This includes the baby’s older siblings. These women tend to view birth as an experience to be shared by the whole family. While siblings can be present at some hospital births, it is easier to accommodate them at a home birth. Your older children may feel more comfortable attending a birth at home. The hospital can seem like a big, scary place to children. They feel comfortable and safe in their homes, so it makes sense that they would feel more … Continue reading

Medicaid in Mississippi Covers Family Planning

Every Medicaid program has a portion that covers women who are pregnant. In some states, this is included within the main Medicaid program, and in others it is separate. The state of Mississippi does both, and also has a portion that covers family planning. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to provide affordable health insurance coverage for individuals and families who are low-income and who do not make enough money to be able to purchase a health plan from a private insurance company. Medicaid is funded by both the federal government and … Continue reading

Blood Test Results Lead to Divorce

A simple blood test can reveal a lot about a person. It also can tell you important information about who that person is related to. When blood test results reveal unexpected things, this can lead to family problems, (including divorce). Genealogists may want to keep this in mind before ordering a home DNA kit. A student in Taiwan was studying blood types and hereditary properties in his junior-high school biology class. He learned that his blood type was B, and that his father’s blood type was A. This lead the student to ask his father how that could be possible. … Continue reading

Mom Adds Octuplets to Brood of Six

By now, you may have read the story about the California mom who just gave birth to octuplets – that’s right, eight babies. While the mom, who had six children already, is not a celebrity, it is almost that the babies will be. After all, the mom is only the second person in U.S. history to give birth to eight babies at once. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t envy her! All the babies are reportedly doing fine, but may have to stay in the hospital up to two months as a precaution. But, there is quite … Continue reading

Sleep Deprivation and Infant Abuse?

The CDC recently published a shocking report. According to their study, 91,000 infants per year are abused or neglected during their first year of life and about 33% of those abuse cases occur within the first week of life. Experts everywhere are calling for more focus to be put on this critical time period of mom adjusting to caring for a newborn. Especially if the newborn shows traits of being colicky or fussy. (I just have to point out here that most babies aren’t colicky or really fussy in the hospital.) While the statistics are shocking there are a few … Continue reading

Attaching with Extended Family

Some adopted young adults say that although they felt a part of their immediate families, they never felt quite like “one of the clan” with their extended relatives. One adoptive mother theorizes that for relatives who live far apart, reunions tended to focus on genes and history, since relatives who had spent many years at a distance had few shared experiences to build a relationship on. Relatives commented on who had grown up to look like who, remembered family births, and told baby stories comparing new parents and their babies. This mother reported that her kids were likely to hear, … Continue reading

Birth Videos for Kids

If you plan to have your child present at the birth of his or her sibling, you will need to spend time preparing them for the birth. Videos are a great way to introduce children to the concept of birth. They can get an idea of what is going to happen and you have the opportunity to gauge their reaction to the video. A good video is a great way to begin the conversation about the birth of the baby. You may think that watching shows like A Baby Story or Birth Day will help prepare your children to witness … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Gifts for Pet Moms

I don’t have children –human ones, that is—but I do have my dog and two cats and I do consider myself their mom. So does my husband. Most Mother’s Days he spoils me with cards from both the pets and himself expressing their appreciation for all I do for them. It’s a dearly treasured gesture. (A lot of times it’s even accompanied with breakfast in bed or the question, “Where would you like me to take you for breakfast today?” Since I’m a big breakfast lover, this is one of the best gifts I can get!) The other day while … Continue reading

Stats Show: Smoking Down – Weight Up

Here are the latest statistics about children in the United States. All of the statistics were taken from the brief, America’s Children in Brief: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, 2006, which can be found on the site Childstats.gov. Child Stats is composed of a group of federal agencies that analyzes and reports data on children and families. In the report I found that there are a number of improvements as well as a few things that we need to improve upon. The birthrate to unmarried teenagers has been declining since 1994. But recently the birthrate among unmarried women 20 and … Continue reading
