What To Expect…. in a Movie?

If you’re reading the pregnancy blog here on Families, I’ll bet you that you’ve also read the well known book, “What To Expect When You’re Expecting.” It’s a staple on every pregnant woman’s reading list. After all, the book sums up just about every symptom and milestone of pregnancy, and it comes with its own online community. I used to keep it at my bedside during my pregnancy so I could stay up late reading about what was supposed to happen to me next. I was always surprised by how accurate the book was! It just goes to show you … Continue reading

Induction: What to Expect

During my pregnancy, I had no reason to expect that I would have to be induced other than the fact that my mom did. But since the doctor assured me that wasn’t necessarily an indicator that I would need an induction as well, I assumed I would go into labor naturally. If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that I did, in fact, end up needing an induction. It was intimidating because I did not know what to expect and I was terrified of the IV. Those pesky little IV’s are pretty much mandatory … Continue reading

More Evidence Against Routine Induction

A growing number of doctors have been advocating routine inductions in their patients. In some practices, this is standard procedure at 41 weeks. It was for my OB, but fortunately, I went into labor 8 days late, on the day I was to go in to “discuss” induction. In other practices, doctors routinely induce patients for various reasons, including the belief the baby is growing too large, there is low fluid or the mother is diabetic. Natural birth advocates and many midwives have long warned against routine inductions. They cite several problems that can arise from routine induction. Many worry … Continue reading

Wisdom From Week Four of the Atkins Diet

I used the fourth week of the Atkins diet as a way to transition between Phase One, Induction, and Phase Two, OWL. I had started changing up the way I had been eating for the past three weeks just a little bit. This, of course, provided a challenge. Originally, my plan was to stay in the Induction Phase until I lost about half of the weight that I intended to lose. After having an unexpected allergic reaction to lettuce in the third week of the Atkins diet, I decided it would be a good idea to move on to the … Continue reading

Atkins Diet – End of the First Week

Making it through the first week on the Atkins diet is something to feel good about. This new way of eating started to feel normal by the last few days of the first week. Things were getting easier, and I had some accomplishments that I was proud of. Two of the beverages that a person is allowed to drink while doing the Induction Phase of the Atkins diet are water and tea. Before starting this diet, I was drinking one or two sodas each day. Within the first week of Atkins I had already gotten used to drinking a whole … Continue reading

Atkins Diet – Days Four and Five

The first three days that I was on the Atkins diet were easier than I expected them to be. I was having fun figuring out how to fix foods in ways that were new to me. On day four, things continued to go well. Day five, on the other hand, turned out to be the worst day since I started the Atkins diet. I started day four feeling optimistic. I had managed to stay under 20 carbs every day so far. I hadn’t had any soda since I started the Atkins diet, and I wasn’t experiencing any caffeine cravings. I … Continue reading

My First Day on Atkins

I did not know what to expect from my first day on the Atkins diet. Would I crave the foods I wasn’t allowed to eat? Would I be hungry? What would the Atkins diet do to my allergies, and other health issues? I was about to find out. The Atkins book strongly suggests that you read up to the chapter that talks about the first phase before you go ahead and start Phase 1. I discovered this when I flipped directly to the chapter describing Phase 1, (which is also called Induction). Despite this warning, I must admit, I started … Continue reading

ICP: Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy

Yesterday I blogged about PUPPP, a pregnancy-related skin rash that causes intense itching on the skin and usually appears on the abdomen first. Another pregnancy related condition that causes intense itching is Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy, or ICP. As I mentioned yesterday, ICP is a much more serious condition that involves the liver’s ability to secret bile. When bile backs up in the liver, bile acids in the bloodstream increase and deposit in the skin. The bile acid deposits cause extreme itching. Unlike PUPPP, ICP does not cause a skin rash. Another difference between the two conditions is where the … Continue reading

An Unbelievable Error

I just read the most incredible story; I can’t believe it’s true. Apparently a few years ago, at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, a women came into the hospital asking for a cesarean section. The doctors unsuccessfully attempted to induce labor. They then unsuccessfully tried to do a cesarean. That is, the cesarean would have been successful if the women was actually pregnant. You’re probably thinking this is an April Fools joke, but I assure you, it is not.http://blogs.families.com/admin/b2edit.php?blog=31 The woman in question was suffering from a condition called pseudocyesis, a disorder, which I’ve written … Continue reading
