Green Tree Offers Homeowners and Flood Insurance All in One

Typically, a homeowners insurance policy will not cover damages caused by flooding. If you want coverage for that type of situation, you have to buy a separate flood insurance policy. Green Tree Insurance has combined the two policies into one. This is great for homeowners! Green Tree Insurance sent a very interesting email to my husband today. We have a mortgage with this company, and it isn’t unusual for people to get email from places that they have a loan with. This email had some unexpected news that I thought was important enough to share. When you buy a house, … Continue reading

Hiking Safety

After going hiking today with one of my hiking buddies, I started thinking about hiking safety. There are several things to take into consideration. Sun Safety Sun can damage your skin, even when it is cloudy and you think you won’t get burned. Wearing sunscreen is a must! I recommend keeping a small container of sun screen in your car or hiking backpack. Stores like target sell small, convenient tubes of sunscreen or you can squeeze some into a reusable liquid container. I also like to add a light colored hat and sunglasses when hiking in the summer. Since the … Continue reading

Keeping Safe on the Bike Trail

When I was growing up my family used to go on bike rides together. It was always so much fun to ride even around the neighborhood on a summer evening. Such fond memories cannot be kept hidden away but shared and relived with the next generation. So, I have brought the fun and hopefully future memories to cherish to my family. With a family of children with such vast age differences finding a family activity can be a challenge. However, bicycling is one activity we all can enjoy despite age differences. I have discovered a way to make this family … Continue reading

Natural Gas Drilling: Safe or Not

I will be the first to admit that I don’t know a lot about how we get our energy. I don’t give much thought to what goes on behind the scenes to light my house, power my television, heat my stove, or cool my house. But, in writing this green blog, I must do a lot of eye-opening research. Today, I stumbled across an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about drilling for natural gas. Specifically, the article focused on a coloring book to teach children about natural gas drilling. The coloring book features a cute little dinosaur called Terry, a … Continue reading

Halloween: Orange, Black and Green

The problem with buying reduced priced Halloween candy so early in October (you know, so you can cross it off your to-do list) is that you end up eating chocolate bars for breakfast. So much for being healthy… or green. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), my sugar-coated purchase is not doing a thing to help the planet… or my waistline. This year the EWG is encouraging parents across the nation to add some green to the black and orange Halloween mix by following some simple tips, including: Make Your Own Costume: The EWG discourages purchasing new Halloween getups … Continue reading

Hot Tea Time

There is a certain time of the day (often) and a certain mental disposition (calm) when I truly enjoy drinking tea. Tea has a calming effect for me as a person and even more so as a mostly-stay-at-home Dad. Unlike cracking open a soda or quickly inhaling an energy drink, tea takes time to prepare, and I lovingly prepare it. I make sure the temperature is just right. I make sure the cup is clean. I even have a prefered cup: a rather unsightly winter mug with a giant snowman on it. I steep my tea for a certain amount … Continue reading

Green Parenting Tips

Being green starts at home and if you are like many of us, you have children. But, you can adopt green parenting strategies that can help the environment. Here are a few green parenting tips: Swap Kid’s Clothes Most kids outgrow clothes before they can stain them or tear them up, so swapping your child’s clothes with family and friends is a great recycling idea. Unfortunately for me, most of my son’s friends are girls, but there are a few younger boys he knows that we give good condition hand-me-downs to. Another great recycling idea is, as your child ages … Continue reading

Snow White’s Secret Green Streak

For my wrap-up to environmental week, I’m going to explore whether or not Walt Disney was, in part, responsible for the modern environmental movement. According to a book by a Cambridge University scholar, Disney films, particularly those produced between 1937 and 1967 and 1984 and 2005, are responsible for making viewers respond to and care more for the natural world. “The Idea of Nature in Disney Animation” by Dr. David Whitley, an English literature professor, argues that the eras of Walt Disney and Michael Eisner produced films which made young viewers in particular aware of nature and the issues surrounding … Continue reading

Homemade Green Cleaning Products That Work – Air Fresheners

In my house we’re very frugal and try to live as “green” as possible. It’s not always easy finding earth-friendly products that are cheap and work well. If you’ve ever tried any of the popular eco-safe solutions, you may have been as frustrated with them as I was. They’re usually more expensive than anything I can get at the local Dollar Tree or 99 cents Only Store, they smell weird, and just don’t get the job done. In my search for cutting corners and cutting down on stress when it comes to time and money, I decided to do some … Continue reading

Tea Tree Oil: Worth The Risks?

I’ll admit it. I jumped on the tea tree oil bandwagon, and I don’t want to get off. Tea tree oil is said to have numerous uses and health benefits. From relieving the itch of insect bites and speeding up the healing process of cuts and bruises, to clearing up acne and curing athlete’s foot, it seems there is nothing tea tree oil can’t do. I didn’t start using tea tree oil until I came across recipes for homemade baby wipe solutions that called for a couple drops of the oil. My baby has always had sensitive skin that is … Continue reading
