Baby Preparations: The Travel System

I recently received a phone call from my sister that is a new mommy. She and her one week old baby were out running some errands and she was using her new travel system, specifically the stroller, for the first time. She called me because she could not get the infant car seat out of the stroller. She was in such distress, that I went up stairs and pulled my infant car seat out of the closet and lugged it outside to fit it into our stroller (we have the same travel system). Clearly something was not lined up properly … Continue reading

Safety is a Good Choice for Your Health

For a large portion of the year, it’s dark when I drive to work at the cats-only boarding facility. I usually take a back road, rather than the highway — less traffic, nice scenery, a better ride all around. This particular road has very little in the way of shoulders — and no sidewalks — for bikers and walkers. Two mornings in a row, I’ve encountered someone who didn’t take safety seriously. One was on a bike, riding down the middle of the road. Thankfully, I saw the bike’s reflectors and knew something was in my path… but didn’t make … Continue reading

Bladder Infection in Pregnancy

Bladder infection is a bacteria infection that causes inflammation in the bladder. This is also called cystitis or a urinary tract infection. The urinary tract runs from the kidneys to the bladder to the urethra. A bladder infection results when bacteria enter the urethra and travels to the bladder. If the infection continues up the tract to the kidneys, the condition is far more serious. The condition is fairly common, affecting about five percent of pregnant women. Hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy cause women to be slightly more at risk of developing the infection when they are pregnant. Symptoms … Continue reading

Enjoying the Beach, Safely

Many of the most popular summertime vacation spots include a beach. You may have read, in this blog or elsewhere, that tanning is not a good idea during pregnancy. You may be wondering if this means you can’t go to the beach. In a word, no. You can still enjoy some time on the beach by following a few safety tips. One of the biggest problems with tanning and spending time at the beach is overheating. You can help avoid overheating by staying in shade and getting in the water to keep from getting too hot. If you are really … Continue reading

Adoption Blog in Month in Review: June, Part Two

I reflect on my co-blogger Lyn’s blog in the Education Blog about teen-age girls making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Teen mothers who plan adoption for their babies are less likely to go on welfare than those who parent as teens. Unfortunately, most mothers choosing adoption are young adults—teenagers often decide to parent. Of course, some teen moms do a fine job—but these girls will quickly realize it’s no lark. My blog Wild Horses Couldn’t Drag Me Away from You cautions that some doctors’ and dentists’ comments and policies regarding keeping parents out can be … Continue reading

Is it Safe to Visit the Nail Salon?

When you are pregnant, a little pampering is good for your self esteem. For some women, this means a visit to the nail salon. Once you are inside, you may become concerned about the strong smell of chemicals. The smell of the acrylics and gel is enough to knock you off your feet. The effect of the fumes in your local nail salon on the developing fetus is not known. There haven’t been any definitive studies done on this. While most pregnant women who work in these salons seem to be fine, there haven’t been many large scale studies or … Continue reading

Amusement Park Safety Tips

I love going to amusement parks, though I freely admit that I steer clear of the thrill rides. (Can you blame me after reading this story?) That being said many of us (year-round school students not included) are smack in the middle of summer vacation—the time of the year that theme parks see a record number of guests. If your family is planning to spend one of the last weeks of summer break on a theme park vacation you may want to keep these tips in mind: Be Vigilant. This is especially important if you are visiting an amusement park … Continue reading

Moving During Pregnancy

Pregnancy may not be the ideal time to move to a new home, but sometimes it’s necessary. We moved from Florida to Pennsylvania when I was four weeks away from my due date with our third baby. Whether you are moving to the next block or across the country, there are some things you should consider. If possible, allow plenty of time to pack. When we moved, my husband got a promotion with his company. They gave him about three weeks’ notice to move. I was working full time as a teacher and had a two year old and a … Continue reading

Forget The Don’t List Here Are Things That You Can Do While Pregnant

There can be days when it seems like your positive pregnancy test came with a list of restrictions a mile long. You go to the neighborhood deli to get some lunch and then realize that you have been told not to eat lunch meat. Ski season is just around the corner and you realize that you are going to have to sit this one out. Depending upon how far along you are in pregnancy and how your pregnancy is progressing, you may be even further restricted by bed rest and other activity limitations as you go along. Even on those … Continue reading

Choosing A Stroller For Your Baby

One item that you might be thinking about including in your baby registry is a stroller. I struggled with the decision to add a stroller to my baby registry because it is a larger gift than most people’s budgets could accommodate. I added one after my mother pointed out that with many stores that have baby registries, you can purchase items from your registry at a discount if you do not receive them as gifts. A group of my aunts surprised me by pooling their resources to purchase my stroller as a baby shower gift. The variety of strollers that … Continue reading
