As soon as the word gets out that you are expecting a precious little bundle, the torrential downpour of well-meaning, sometimes misplaced or misinformed advice begins hailing down on you and your innocent journey toward motherhood. Lest you suffer needlessly, your friends and family are going to make sure you know every home remedy known to man for morning sickness, back pain, foot swelling, headaches, and hip pain. Like it or not, the crowds will comment every time they see you lift something heavier than a standard sized envelope. Don’t even think about skipping breakfast unless you want three lectures … Continue reading

Halloween Costume Ideas for Pregnant Women

Last year I was only 17 weeks pregnant when Halloween came around, so I didn’t have too much of a bump to work with on my costume. I ended up dressing as an obstetrician and wore my sister’s scrubs. Some people ended up thinking I actually worked at a hospital and didn’t have time to change. The scrubs were pretty snug around my belly, though, so it was a cute costume anyway. When you’re well into your second or third trimester during the Halloween season, costumes are hard to come by. Maternity costumes are more expensive than normal ones, which … Continue reading

Avoiding the Pregnancy Conversation Trap

If two people are having a conversation and at least one of them is pregnant, the conversation will most likely go in one of four directions. Negative: 1. The pregnant woman will ramble about her pregnancy and the other will get sick of hearing about it. 2. The non-expecting party will keep asking about the pregnancy, and the pregnant women will get sick of talking about it. Positive: 3. The discussion will be completely overtaken by baby talk and neither party minds. 4. Both parties avoid the subject altogether. This happens when one or both parties are either not interested … Continue reading

When People Touch Your Belly

The strangest thing happens once you start showing. People seem unable to resist touching a pregnant belly. At no other point in life will strangers approach you and try to touch your stomach. For some reason, some have no problem invading the personal space of a stranger to touch her stomach. If you are lucky, the stranger will ask before touching. Even this can be awkward. How do you say “no” in a polite way? Personally, I wouldn’t worry too much about politeness. After all, the question isn’t very polite, is it? Well, it could be worse. Some don’t even … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About Handling Unwanted Belly Comments

I am very lucky to be with a man that finds the pregnant body sexy and beautiful. And he’s not the only one: Men in most cultures find fertility very attractive, leading the women to flaunt it in its many forms, especially pregnancy. Coming home to this kind of acceptance had a profound impact on my self-image during what was a very large pregnancy for me. This was especially true with all the unwanted, sometimes rude comments I received due to my large belly. I found respite in talking to my fiancé about how upset they made me. I’m not … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About Handling Unwanted Belly Touching

I for one find the pregnant belly a very beautiful thing, and I’m sure that I’m not alone in my sentiments. We’ve all experienced the stranger in the grocery store coming up to us and rubbing our belly affectionately, practically bursting with bubbly joy. Women especially just love to gush about how wonderful it is to be bringing a new baby into the world. It’s as if by touching your belly they feel like they are already touching a soft little baby hand. Sure, I loved showing off my big belly. And I also loved sharing the news and talking … Continue reading

In closing my very first month as a Pregnancy Blogger, I am closing out a year as well. I would like to say thank you to those of you that have read my entries so far.
