How To Pick Your Baby’s Name

For some expectant parents, choosing a name for their new baby is a no-brainer. Some women have had their baby’s name picked out for years. Some families look forward to passing down a family name. Some couples will even name their child after the city or place in which they were conceived, like all four of Ron Howard’s children. (Can you guess which state daughter Bryce Dallas was conceived in?) For those of us who don’t have a name lined up, however, picking out a name can be pretty tricky. After all, you’ll probably say it about 3 million times … Continue reading

Choosing a Name: It’s a Tough Job

I think choosing your baby’s name is the hardest part of becoming a parent. When I was picking out paint colors for the nursery, I knew I could always repaint if I didn’t like it a few years down the road. When I was picking out a doctor, I knew I could always switch if he wasn’t the right fit. But when you are picking out a name for your child, the pressure is on because that name will stick with them for life. What if you choose a name you love but everyone at school makes fun of your … Continue reading

What’s in a Name?

Every parent knows the importance of finding the right name for a child. As a fiction writer I also know how important it is to find the right name for my characters. I’ve written a little about it here. The wrong name can completely destroy the illusion a writer is trying to create. Sometimes the reader brings their own ideas to a book. That can work for a writer or against them, as happened with a recent novel I started to read. The main character, who was not exactly like likeable, had the same name as my daughter. Try as … Continue reading

Would You Give Them the Same Name Now?

The other day, I was chatting with a couple of my kids and we started talking about names. As I am studying up and getting ready to add a dog to our family, we started to banter around possible names. This conversation evolved and led into a conversation about the names I had chosen for my kids. One of my daughters asked me “If you could name me all over again, would you give me the same name?” I thought this was a great question! While I do think that my kids’ names suit them, maybe there are better, more … Continue reading

Don’t You Just Love Little “Love Him”?

Whenever I hear a story like this one I always think of the episode of Friends where Pheobe discovers that the laws in the United States allow for one to legally change one’s name to virtually anything. So Phoebe decides that she is going to rename herself Princess Consuela Bananahammock. Because hey–why not? Apparently a whole host of my generation has seen Friends and identifies with the self confident Pheobe who has no reservations about going through life seriously, as Princess Consuela Bananahammock. Oh but wait. . .Phoebe is a fictional character, but I think that someone forgot to tell … Continue reading

What Should I Name my Child?

What should I name my baby? Whatever you want. Yes that seems like a simple question and deserves a simple answer, but it can get more involved than that when you are a single parent. Lacih8607 asked whether or not she should give her child it’s father’s last name. For some single moms this can be a very confusing, and stressful event. In my case, I knew that my son’s father was not going to be involved in his life. I knew he didn’t care what his son’s name was going to be, or even if he got a name … Continue reading
