Let’s Talk About Birthing Big: Super Tonio!

“Super Tonio” is the name given to a new baby boy born February 1st, weighing 14.5 pounds in Cancun, Mexico. The baby has caused a sensation, with crowds gathering at the windows of a maternity unit trying to get a peek at the baby who is at least twice the size of most of the others there. Antonio Vasconcelos was, of no surprise to this blogger, born via c-section at Cancun’s Jesus Kumate Rodriguez hospital. The hospital’s director reports that the baby is healthy, despite high blood sugar and a slight blood infection, both of which are under control. The … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About the Mirror, the Crown and the Miracle

Aside from the experience as a whole, there will be some specific magical elements present in the delivery room. The Mirror – This item is often found in delivery rooms, inconspicuously set to the side and given little thought throughout most of labor. It will present itself to you at the most awkward moment, where you will most likely expect it the least and initially be slightly annoyed at its appearance. Its purpose will then become clear to you: It is merely a temporary talisman. You may use it simply for encouragement if you so choose, or you may use … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About The Four-Minute Delivery!

Here’s a fun story that I just read about, and think I will share in case you haven’t heard it: January 30, 2007 brought an unexpected surprise to one Missouri woman, who ended up with the “dream delivery” of pregnant women everywhere. A mere four minutes after Christina Palczynksi’s water broke, her little Mary Ellen was born. Christina’s husband had called 911 and the operator walked him through the steps of helping to deliver his daughter – right on the kitchen floor! The family was amazed at such a quick delivery, especially since Christina’s last child took 19 hours to … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About Sharing Our Birth Stories!

Birth is an unpredictable, unimaginable experience. It is like a snowflake – never the same thing twice, or for any two women. It transforms everyone that experiences it in its most natural form, and those who unfortunately do not may be left with a misunderstanding of its beauty. Nevertheless, birth stories are passed on through the generations in many families, and have been done so for centuries on end. Some women are put off of birth by the way it is portrayed in the media, or from a personal negative birth experience. They may not enjoy sharing their personal stories … Continue reading

The Let’s Talk Blog Top Ten – Reasons for a Homebirth

In my opinion, there are way too many reasons to count. However, they can all more or less be included in these TEN reasons to have a homebirth: TEN: Feel safe – Being without fear is the #1 key to having a successful, drug-free delivery. I personally would be scared to death of a hospital birth, while some women may be scared to be without the medical umbrella of a hospital. NINE: Have it your way – When giving birth at a hospital, it’s hard not to let our doctors or midwives run the show. After all, you may be … Continue reading

Sometimes You Need to Stand up to Medical Professionals

The day that I gave birth to my son was the happiest day of my life. It was not fun nor easy, but when I finally got to hold the little guy in my arms, it could not compare to any other moment. Every other thing paled in comparison, and the only other thing that could possibly compare would be if I ever have another child. (Which Jonathan is ready for and has been telling me for over a month and a half that I need to get married so he can have a brother or sister.) My son loves … Continue reading
