Meeting Baby For The First Time

If you are pregnant with your first child, you may be wondering what it’s like to meet your new baby for the first time at the hospital. Of course, since every child and every birth is different, there is no “standard procedure” by which new parents get acquainted with their newborns. The births of my two sons were different, so I met each of them in a slightly different way. Dylan was born at around seven in the evening. He was born in a local hospital, and my labor had been induced because of preeclampsia. The delivery was fairly uneventful, … Continue reading

Who Will Get Up With The Baby?

In the past, I have always nursed my babies, so I have always been the one to get up with them. Now that I am bottle feeding, we are trying to figure out what works best for my husband and I so that we both can get some much needed sleep. With three little ones to take care of, sleep is hard to come by these days. What has been working for us is that my husband gets up at the first feeding, and then I get up at the second. This is mostly because I do better in the … Continue reading

We Survived Our First Nights With a Newborn

We survived our first night as parents to a three week old. It seems so surreal that two days ago we did not even know that our little girl was in existence and now here we are parents to a 3 year old, a one year old and a three week old. I am not going to lie getting three kids in a less than five months was a lot. It was a huge culture shock. When we started the adoption process we did not even consider a new born and here we are. Unlike when you have a child … Continue reading

Our First Meeting with the Midwife

Once I found the midwife that I wanted to attend me and my pregnancy, I gave her a call to see if she would take me on as a client. I introduced myself and told her that I was seeking a homebirth after having a birth center birth with my first child. I added that she knows my mom. She got really excited when she realized who I was because she had recently talked to my mother about my husband and I trying to get pregnant and potentially moving back. Then she asked my due date. I told her sometime … Continue reading

No Time To Be Sick

Sick days. Isn’t it funny that once you become a single parent that term no longer applies to you? I have always been fortunate enough to work for companies that provide a generous time off benefit, but still, I never took real vacations. I was too busy being the caretaker to vacation. As a single parent I knew that any paid time I had needed to be hoarded in case Hailey got sick. First, you can’t send them to day care when they’re sick and you don’t want to leave them at home alone when they are sick either. So … Continue reading

How To Pick Your Baby’s Name

For some expectant parents, choosing a name for their new baby is a no-brainer. Some women have had their baby’s name picked out for years. Some families look forward to passing down a family name. Some couples will even name their child after the city or place in which they were conceived, like all four of Ron Howard’s children. (Can you guess which state daughter Bryce Dallas was conceived in?) For those of us who don’t have a name lined up, however, picking out a name can be pretty tricky. After all, you’ll probably say it about 3 million times … Continue reading

Helping Your Baby Manage the Fear of New Things

Babies are new creatures in the world and are naturally curious about the things, people and happenings around them. This can often get them into trouble as when they are exploring something that could be dangerous, such as an unprotected stairway or a hot stove. Because of the danger, we baby proof our homes and keep a close watch on our little ones. Babies also come with a healthy does of instinctual fears that can help them stay out of danger, such as the fear of falling, a fear of loud noises and even a fear of the dark. These … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: You Said Not to Pump. . .But They Said to Pump

Question: Hi. I’ve read most of your blogs on breastfeeding and first, thank you so much. We’ve had a rough start and my baby was in the NICU for a few weeks so I had to pump. But when she came home, I stopped pumping because I had read somewhere that you said pumping does not increase your supply. However, the nurses in the hospital said I need to keep pumping to keep up my supply because the baby won’t suck effectively. What’s your advice? First of all, you’re welcome and I’m glad you’re breastfeeding your baby. You’re right. I … Continue reading

Church Announces a Training Meeting

The church announced that a worldwide leadership training meeting is scheduled for February 9, 2008. The time will depend on your local area. The training meeting is for all members age eighteen and older. This is the first time that all members are invited to attend a leadership training meeting. Worldwide leadership meetings are broadcasts that are used to reach leaders around the world. They address specific leadership needs and questions. I had the opportunity to attend two several years ago and I was impressed at how well the church used this format to teach principles and still convey the … Continue reading

Marriage First, Love Second?

Last week I watched The Painted Veil and was swept away by the love story. Which at first wasn’t much of a love story. Naomi Watts played Kitty, a vain, spoiled selfish young woman whose parents –her mother in particular—want to see her married. (I should add the story is set in the 1920s when even more emphasis was placed on women marrying.) At a party, her father invites Dr. Walter Fane (played by Edward Norton), a quiet, reserved young man he hopes will catch Kitty’s eye. He doesn’t so much catch her eye as he does catch her off … Continue reading
