Food Additives and Diet in Pregnancy

When you become pregnant, you spend more time thinking about what you are eating. After all, you are nourishing your baby with every bite you take. As you read the labels, you may be concerned about the additives in many foods. Artificial Sweeteners such as Saccharin, Aspartame and Splenda are in a variety of sugar free foods. These are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so less is needed. This results in fewer calories for the foods. The safety of the artificial sweetener depends on the type that is used. Mono in Pregnancy

When we are pregnant, we tend to worry about catching viruses or other infections. Illnesses that didn’t seem like a big deal suddenly take on new urgency. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, there is no increased chance of miscarriage or birth defects when the mother is infected with mono during pregnancy. Mononucleosis is spread through close contact, for example by saliva. This is how Mono got the nickname, “The Kissing Disease.” It tends to … Continue reading

Let’s Talk Pregnancy – Awesome, Healthy Drink Options

With pregnancy comes new eating and drinking habits. Those of you who are used to enjoying a hot cup of coffee every morning may be seriously stumped as to how much is allowed, and/or what to replace it with. I myself was not a habitual coffee drinker, but I did enjoy a cup now and then. Decaf coffee does not appeal to me as it is decaffeinated by a process involving chlorine, so I was more interested in a naturally decaffeinated beverage. Colas are obviously a no-no due to caffeine content as well, so what is the pregnant woman to … Continue reading

What Is Listeriosis?

Your prenatal care provider may have suggested that you avoid certain foods like soft cheeses and deli meats during pregnancy. In case you are wondering why, here’s the lowdown on a nasty food borne illness called Listeriosis. Listeriosis is caused by a bacteria called Listerium monocytogenes. Pregnant women and their babies can be seriously affected by Listeriosis, which can cause blood infections, meningitis, and other serious and life threatening complications. Fortunately, it is a relatively rare illness, with about 2500 cases annually in the United States. It is very serious, though, and can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, and infections … Continue reading

It could make you want to search through old family photos, to see how closely the twins resembled each other. Or, you might want to do some additional research, to see if there was … Continue reading

Happy Birthday E

I wish a great big happy birthday to my baby daughter. Baby E is one. I can’t believe it. Where did the time go? I can’t believe I now have two toddlers. Baby E has been an adventure. She has not had the best health, but has always been happy. I always said that she’s the happiest miserable baby. We finally got a lot of her misery under control when we got her on the right medicine and formula combination. Baby E has a lot of doctors and only the pediatrician and dentist are not specialists. We’ve been to the … Continue reading

Don’t Wait Too Long

People say that babies are expensive, but the truth is, you’ll probably spend much more money on other things in your lifetime. Choosing to become a parent is one of those things you simply cannot sum up between a dollar sign and a decimal point. The gain you receive from having a child is worth more than you can imagine and the interest is compounded by the minute. Don’t worry about the sleepless nights, the spit up or the poopy diapers. Those days come and they go, and they don’t make up the substance of what is so wonderful about … Continue reading

Watching Out for Food Allergies

You’ve probably noticed that I am new to the baby blog! I am still writing over at the pregnancy blog, but since my life is monopolized by a cute little 17-month-old who has recently learned to climb just about every piece of furniture, I thought I would share my experiences, advice and know-how over here as well. While my son is healthy, there is one issue which has a huge impact on our day to day life: he has food allergies. Ever since he was diagnosed just shortly after his first birthday, the way we eat and how we handle … Continue reading
