The Fire Truck Part II

The boys were enjoying themselves waiting in the non moving vehicle especially since they did not need to “buckle up.” Within a few minutes we saw the real life fire truck drive up into the park’s parking lot. The birthday boy’s mom was not back from getting hot tea, but we took the kids out to meet the fire truck and the firefighters (we did not want them to leave because no one was around). While the birthday boy was a little hesitant, my son excitedly ran up to the fire truck to get a closer look. At first the … Continue reading

Climbing Part III

Once I realized that my daughter could scale the stairs, I started to take conscious precautions to prevent her from more stairs climbing. I know that she will inevitably tumble down the stairs at some point in her young life, but I would like to prevent that event(s) from happening as much as possible; thus the barricades. I know that gates can be handy and a better solution but wooden posts are constructed in such a way that attaching a gate to it is if not impossible horribly difficult and expensive. Instead, I found ways to “block” the staircase. First … Continue reading

Anniversaries and Date Nights Part II

My husband and I are really horrible at taking the time to spend time together as a couple. The predominant rationalization that we make is that the cost involved with going on dates is too prohibitive. Getting a sitter, going to a moving, or going to a restaurant seem to be very cost prohibitive for our budget. It is especially hard for me to justifying eating out when we can make much higher quality and healthier foods (that in my opinion tastes much better) for a fraction of the cost than we can get at any of our local dining … Continue reading

Mobile Baby Part II

My daughter seemed to transition from immobile to mobile baby overnight! She struggled for several weeks to master rolling over from her tummy to her back. Then without notice she not only mastered the skill to roll over from her tummy to her back, she also became a pro at rolling from her back to her tummy. With her sudden mobility came an impressive ability to grasp toys with both hands. She started with small toys and soon was able to handle larger toys like dolls and stuffed animals. With her new found mobile freedom, she loves to spend lots … Continue reading

Our Evolution of Discipline Part III

In the early days of putting our disciplinary plan into actions, we did not really visit other people very often so dealing with him acting out at someone’s house was not a problem. Inevitably, once the craziness of the beginning of the school year died down (I was a full time high school teacher at this stage in our son’s life), I started visiting friends again. It was interesting to see how our son interacted with other people. While he was largely very well behaved and and a pretty “good listener,” there were of course instances during our outings to … Continue reading

Labor Part IV

I had been in active labor for a good three hours when, I agreed to have my water broke. I actually never crossed my mind to have my water artificially broken, but in the midst of very strong contractions and the prospect of getting through it sooner, it seemed like a good idea to me. I had to lay down so that the midwife could check my progress and I was eight centimeters dilated. I had several contractions while laying down on my back and they were the worst! The midwife waited for a contraction to put pressure on the … Continue reading

Labor Part III

After about thirty minutes of these stronger contractions, I told my husband to call the midwife. It was about eight in the morning. Once the midwife and her on-call nurse arrived, they checked my progress. I was still only about three centimeters dilated but my cervix was now anterior so there was progress albeit still slow progress in the last eight hours of labor. Soon after the midwife and nurse arrive my contractions continued to get stronger and more painful. The contractions seemed to be right on top of each other. With every contractions I reached for my husband for … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part IV

It is amazing how time gets away from us. We made a really quick stop at the grocery store; both my sister and I have very quick gaits and we were moving through the store to get the items that we needed. Upon our return, we realized that we really did not have very much time to make the frosting and eat dinner. As soon as we walked in the apartment I got to work making the cream cheese frosting and my sister nursed the baby. After the muffins were iced, we rushed to eat as much of our dinner … Continue reading

The Insurance Policy (Part II)

We live in a time that pretty much demands various and numerous insurance policies. We have health insurance, car insurance, home owners/renters insurance, life insurance, etc. the list goes on and on. While my midwife employs what she calls her “Insurance Policy” it doesn’t involve a premium or a deductible. Rather it embraces and demands healthy living. The cost of this insurance policy isn’t necessarily monetary (and it certainly isn’t as expensive as the various insurance premiums), it does require thought, education, daily effort, and persistent commitment. As I mention in Part I, this insurance policy has three parts: nutrition, … Continue reading

Moving In

After being awake for over eighteen hours, you’d think I’d sleep long and late into the morning. Not so. Bright and early at 5:30 in the morning I’m awake. I guess I still have a lot of adrenaline left to finish the move. I wait half an hour to wake up anyone else. 6AM seems a lot less harsh than 5:30AM for some reason although it’s still ridiculously early. My sisters don’t seem to mind and I get them to make more seven grain pancakes and scrambled eggs. I have a lot of work to do today and I have … Continue reading
