Excuse Me, Are These Melons Ripe? Grocery Shopping with my Husband

Flirting with your husband in the produce department while grocery shopping may not seem like your idea of a date, but when you are saving toward a healthy emergency fund, a discussion about fruit may be some of the sweetest words you’ll hear. My husband and I had gotten in the habit of a monthly lunch date, on a Tuesday or Wednesday, when all three children are in school. We only have about a two-hour window of time alone, but this was usually sufficient to have a nice lunch and catch up without being interrupted by little people needing this … Continue reading

With the start of November, I know it’s time for me to start planning for the holidays. As of today, we have just over a couple of weeks until Thanksgiving and just over seven weeks until Christmas. St. Patrick’s Day Foods

With St. Patrick’s Day fast approaching, I have been thinking about and craving some delicious Irish food. Irish food is delicious at any time of year, and this week you can most likely find some of your favorites on sale at the grocery store or on special at restaurants. What kinds of things do people enjoy eating on St. Patrick’s Day? The most popular food on St. Patrick’s Day is the traditional boiled dinner of corned beef and cabbage. It is easy to make, hearty, and delicious. Many people make it in a slow cooker, but it can be prepared … Continue reading

National Crab Meat Day

Today just became my new favorite day of the year! It’s National Crab Meat Day. I’m from Maryland and if you know anything about state mottos, Maryland is for crabs and we are darn proud of it! I always joke that Hailey and most other Maryland babies, are weaned on crab meat. Living in Utah it makes it a little more difficult to indulge in my favorite type of crab, blue crab, but I still manage to have some type of crab several times a year. I don’t often offer recipes on my housekeeping blog because, well, I don’t really … Continue reading

National Frozen Food Day

Hold on to your fresh fruits and vegetables because today, March 6th, is National Frozen Food day. I have to laugh when I run across these on the internet, but they are a fun excuse to cook something completely different for dinner. The first frozen foods were sold to the general public in 1929 by Birdseye. The idea came when Clarence Birdseye was on a fur trapping expedition and saw that the native people of Labrador were freezing food to preserve it. An industry was born! I cannot imagine living without my freezer, frozen vegetables in the winter will carry … Continue reading

Making Valentine’s Day Simple

Valentine’s Day was definitely a family affair for me. Of course, my daughter does have a boyfriend, so she received some extra gifts. But for the most part we made this a family occasion. I’m not the “romantic” type when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Actually, I’m not very romantic at any other time either. I am more about loving on my whole family for this holiday. So when everyone woke up in the morning, there was a card and candy waiting for them. I got the humongous-sized Hershey bars for my children and Swedish Fish for my husband. But … Continue reading

We Need More Food Holidays

I’m not a very good cook, I only cook enough to keep us alive, but if I have something to celebrate, then I love to cook! I love cooking for a crowd on Thanksgiving or Christmas. I actually look forward to it, plan it out and dance around the kitchen, excited for everyone to come to dinner. The rest of the year, not so much, cooking is boring! In an effort to make every day a holiday and motivate myself to cook I decided to take advantage of some of the lesser known holidays. So dust off your apron and … Continue reading
