Nineteen Weeks

We are quickly approaching the half way point of my pregnancy! The excitement from last week (birthdays and the ultrasound etc) continues with the visit of my thirty three week pregnant sister and her husband. It is hard to believe that I have only been morning sickness free for three weeks; it has made all the difference! Week nineteen is going to be a busy week! I spent the first two days of week nineteen doing last minute things for my sister’s baby shower: baking, flower shopping, etc. I am so thankful for the renewed energy that I have had … Continue reading

Interview with “The Sing-Off” Contestants, Vocal Point, Part Two

I’m having fun today interviewing three members of Vocal Point, the talented a capella group competing on television’s “The Sing-Off.” This group is easily our favorite as we gather around to watch as a family. You can read part one of my interview here. What does singing mean to you, and why did you choose to perform with an a capella group rather than a more traditional band? Keith Evans answered, “I started singing when I was three, and have always loved the emotional outlet it provides. Music truly can communicate concepts, feelings and ideas in ways the spoken word … Continue reading

Exercising with a Friend

I can say with complete truthfulness that exercising is hard! There is however no denying how beneficial exercise is to one’s health. This is even more true for pregnant women as exercise not only benefits the pregnant woman but her baby as well. Yet the difficulty remains. Exercise seems to be an ever present cloud because is something that needs to be done nearly every single day. Symptoms of pregnancy does not make conquering the mountain that is exercise any easier, yet perhaps the knowledge that the baby is reaping incalculable benefits might be a better source of motivation. When … Continue reading

Pregnant Sisters Reunited

Amidst the craziness that was my nineteenth week of pregnancy, my thirty three week pregnant sister came for a week long visit. Prior to this visit, I had not seen her for an entire year, which is a really long time for us to go without seeing each other. This particular sister and I are very close: close in age, close in mindset, close in goals, close in values, close in priorities, and recently close in pregnancy. When my sister discovered that she was pregnant, I was the first person she told (besides her husband of course). When I found … Continue reading

New Graduates Can Be Covered By Parent’s Health Insurance

In the next few weeks, there will be a lot of college graduation ceremonies taking place. This is the first group of graduates who will be finishing school since the Affordable Care Act required health insurance companies to cover people who are between the ages of 19 and 26 under their parent’s health insurance plan. This is going to make a big difference. The part of the Affordable Care Act that is going to be the most beneficial to new graduates is the part that was made into law in September of 2010. From that point on, insurance companies were … Continue reading

Study Finds Link Between Premature Birth and ADHD

A study in Sweden has found an interesting link between premature birth, and a diagnosis of ADHD. The earlier a baby is born, the more likely that baby will eventually be diagnosed with ADHD. This might be something for mothers to consider before scheduling a cesarean birth. There seems to be a lot of different studies that are focusing on premature birth in the news lately. Some of these studies focus on trying to discover the cause behind premature births. Others searched for correlations between a mother who was herself born prematurely, and the likelihood that her pregnancy will result … Continue reading

“If I had a Baby, I Would Keep It”

Discussions with eight-year-old Meg seem to be coming thick and fast lately. Meg came into the room while I was watching an early episode (I think the first) of the recent PBS documentary Carrier. This is a ten-episode look at the lives of the men and women serving aboard a Navy aircraft carrier during a six-month deployment. In this episode, one young sailor, about nineteen, reveals to his bunkmates that his girlfriend is pregnant, and that he learned this just a couple of weeks before shipping out. (Okay, I should have turned off the TV when Meg entered the room. … Continue reading

Author Lauren Carr and the Many Animals That Inspire Her, An Interview

My next interview victim –er, I mean subject—is mystery author Lauren Carr. The thing that struck me most about her interview is how ingrained animals are in her life, and therefore in her books. Lauren shared a bunch of wonderful pet-related anecdotes that elicited more than one knowing head nod or chuckle from me. Will it be the same for you? Read for yourself and see if you can’t relate to her life with pets. Courtney Mroch: What kind of things do you write about? (Genre, subject matter, themes, what have you.) Lauren Carr: I am the author of the … Continue reading

What Causes Snoring?

In a strange turn of events last night, I heard myself snoring. I was having a weird dream (sort of a monster movie kind of scenario) and one of the people in my dream kept telling me that I was snoring. “No,” I insisted. “I don’t snore.” But I could HEAR myself snoring while I was dreaming (and denying it). Very weird. I tend to talk in my sleep — I’ve done it since I was a little kid — but don’t often snore. So it made me wonder about the cause. A few different things can cause snoring, like: … Continue reading

General Conference: “Mrs. Patton–The Story Continues”

In his talk “Mrs. Patton-The Story Continues” President Thomas S Monson recalls a talk that he gave in a past conference. The talk was addressed to Mrs. Patton who was the mother of a childhood friend of his. Arthur enlisted in the Navy when he was fifteen years old and went to fight in World War II. While he was serving, President Monson would go and visit his mother. After serving for four years Arthur was lost at sea during a battle. He was only nineteen years old when he died. As a young man, President Monson went to comfort … Continue reading
