First U.S. Baby Born After a Uterus Transplant

TIME reported that, for the first time in the United States, a baby was born to a woman who had a uterus transplant. The birth took place at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. TIME protected the privacy of the woman and her husband in order to protect their identity. This was the first birth of the hospital’s ongoing uterus transplant clinical trial. The women who participated in the trial have absolute uterine factor infertility (AUI). This could mean that their uterus is nonfunctional or is nonexistent. In one of my favorite movies, Father of the Bride Part II, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams play a mother and daughter who conceive around the same time and give birth on the same day. Keaton’s character, Nina, suspects menopause, so it’s assumed that she must be in her fifties. Pregnancy Rates are Dropping

A report from the latest issue of National Vital Statistics Reports (Volume 58, Number 4, October 14, 2009) shows that pregnancy rates are dropping. The data also indicates a significant drop in abortion rates, which leads me to believe that pregnancy prevention is on the rise. Whether this is a result of increased abstinence among teens or birth control is under debate. The pregnancy rate for young teens dropped by 48%. The total pregnancy rate has dropped by 11 percent. Body Image and Weight Gain in Pregnancy

A study at Temple University has resulted in some interesting information about body image and excessive weight gain in pregnancy. As most women know, some of us have an accurate body image, but others view themselves as either thinner or heavier than their actual body weight. According to researchers, this distorted body image can result in a greater risk of gaining too much weight in pregnancy. Over 1500 women who were enrolled in a program called Project Viva were participants in the study. The women were classified as normal weight, overweight or obese.
