First U.S. Baby Born After a Uterus Transplant

TIME reported that, for the first time in the United States, a baby was born to a woman who had a uterus transplant. The birth took place at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. TIME protected the privacy of the woman and her husband in order to protect their identity. This was the first birth of the hospital’s ongoing uterus transplant clinical trial. The women who participated in the trial have absolute uterine factor infertility (AUI). This could mean that their uterus is nonfunctional or is nonexistent. Some of the women in the program have Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) which causes the … Continue reading

The Truth About Your Diet During Pregnancy

One of the assumptions I made about pregnancy prior to becoming pregnant is I’d have a diet-related Get out of Jail Free card.  I knew that there are certain foods it’s best to avoid, but I thought at least I’d have a free pass to eat, well, not quite as much as I wanted, but to feel a bit more guilt-free about evening ice cream binges. That turned out not to be the case at all.  First off, the whole “eating for two” thing isn’t true.  At most, you should eat for one and a quarter.  In addition to that, … Continue reading

More Fun Pregnancy Symptoms: Leg Cramps

In the middle of the night a few weeks ago I woke up with a terrible pain in my leg.  I cried out about it, and immediately began trying to rub and move my leg.  My more-than-half-asleep husband drowsily watched me do this.  He watched me try to bend my leg, to rub it, to put weight and hobble around the room on it.  When I made it to the bathroom he followed me, and asked me if I thought I was just having Braxton-Hicks.  In my leg.  Now we know that if I go into labor in the middle … Continue reading

Pregnancy the Third Time Around

I am in the stage of life right now where I could easily talk myself out of having another child. As I have blogged about before, it’s hard to know when to have another baby. But, I do know that I want another one. But, there are a few things that worry me. * Three seems like a crowd. While I have plenty of people in my life that have 3 or more kids, it just seems like a lot of little people to tote around. I envision myself trying to make a simple trip to the grocery store with … Continue reading

Pregnancy After Age 50

In one of my favorite movies, Father of the Bride Part II, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams play a mother and daughter who conceive around the same time and give birth on the same day. Keaton’s character, Nina, suspects menopause, so it’s assumed that she must be in her fifties. In the US, giving birth beyond age 50 is fairly rare, but it happens more than it used to due to fertility treatments, which allow women of “advanced maternal age” to use the eggs of younger women. Pregnancy in the sixth decade is extremely risky. Surprisingly, risk increases significantly between … Continue reading

Pregnancy Rates are Dropping

A report from the latest issue of National Vital Statistics Reports (Volume 58, Number 4, October 14, 2009) shows that pregnancy rates are dropping. The data also indicates a significant drop in abortion rates, which leads me to believe that pregnancy prevention is on the rise. Whether this is a result of increased abstinence among teens or birth control is under debate. The pregnancy rate for young teens dropped by 48%. The total pregnancy rate has dropped by 11 percent. These numbers do not include the recent rise in teen pregnancy since 2006. So why are people having fewer babies? … Continue reading

Lots of Kids, No Marriage

There are many women who would prefer not to squeeze their bloated bodies into a white wedding dress and walk down a church aisle with swollen ankles during their seventh month of pregnancy. Which is why most brides wait until after the wedding to procreate. Or they do what Rachael Savory did—-wait until they give birth, and then tie the knot. Only in Rachael’s case she didn’t head to the church with her fiance, Jay Wong immediately after giving birth to the couple’s first child. Rather, the British mom waited 22 months after popping out her 10th child to say, … Continue reading

Fun Pregnancy Facts

I’ve scoured the world wide web looking for fun and interesting facts about Pregnancy to entertain you. Enjoy! Did you know… The number of cesarean births has risen to 27% over the last decade. That’s an increase of 40%! Cesarean risk goes up as women age, and with all the woman putting off children for their careers, perhaps this has something to do with the increase in c-sections? The average age for a first time mother is 25-29. It used to be 21 in 1970! I was 25, so I guess I fit the bill! My childbirth class teacher reported … Continue reading

Picture of a Marriage

Yesterday Mick and I had a day date and went to the movies to see ‘Revolutionary Road.’ It is a movie about a marriage. So often we hear that it is women who want to talk out their problems and men who don’t listen. In this case he often wanted to talk about the problems but the wife didn’t want to talk about the problems they were experiencing. The crowd, with the exception of a few brave men like my husband, was predominately female. A collective gasp ran around the theater like a current of electricity when he raised his … Continue reading

Body Image and Weight Gain in Pregnancy

A study at Temple University has resulted in some interesting information about body image and excessive weight gain in pregnancy. As most women know, some of us have an accurate body image, but others view themselves as either thinner or heavier than their actual body weight. According to researchers, this distorted body image can result in a greater risk of gaining too much weight in pregnancy. Over 1500 women who were enrolled in a program called Project Viva were participants in the study. The women were classified as normal weight, overweight or obese. These groups were subdivided into women with … Continue reading
