Hating on the Duggars Post Miscarriage

Nothing like kicking a person when she’s down. What’s that timeless saying credited to wise mothers the world over: If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. That goes double if you are spewing hate via social media platforms. Just ask followers of Michelle Duggar. The reality TV mom is back in the headlines following the announcement that she miscarried what would have been her 20th child. Michelle told People magazine that she and her husband Jim Bob were at the doctor’s office Thursday to find out the sex of their unborn baby when her … Continue reading

Miscarriage Myth

I once had a someone tell me that it didn’t matter how many biological kids I had because I have so many spiritual children to look after and care for. Needless to say, I doubt the words would be considered comforting to someone who just suffered a miscarriage… or even someone who hadn’t. Miscarriage is an extremely sensitive subject for many parents, moms and dads alike. Interestingly, a new report just published in Current Biology is trying to set the record straight on the cause of miscarriages. The research reveals that roughly 40 percent of all fertilized eggs are lost … Continue reading

Misdiagnosed Miscarriages

Occasionally, women who are diagnosed with a miscarriage after an episode of cramping and bleeding go on to have a healthy pregnancy. It’s called misdiagnosed miscarriage, and it happens more than you might think. What is worse is that many women are pressured to end their “doomed” pregnancy medically via D&C or other means. Miscarriages can be misdiagnosed when the estimated date of conception is off. When the ultrasound is done, the doctor may expect to see an embryo of a certain size, but if the dates are off, the baby may not be visible yet. This may lead the … Continue reading

Spotting During Early Pregnancy

When I was about six weeks pregnant with my son, I started experiencing intermittent spotting and became very concerned. I called my doctor right away and scheduled an exam and some blood work. The doctor ended up doing an ultrasound and was unable to find anything wrong with the baby. He diagnosed me with a sensitive cervix and ordered pelvic rest (no sex!) for two weeks. He also told me to get plenty of rest and drink lots of water. After a few days the spotting stopped and did not return for the rest of my pregnancy. Spotting can be … Continue reading

Rubella in Pregnancy

When you visit your health care provider for a pre conception visit or your first prenatal check up, he may take blood. A variety of tests are done. One of these is a rubella titer. This is a test to check for immunity to German measles. Although rubella is rare, contracting it during pregnancy can be very dangerous to the baby. It is a particular concern in early pregnancy when the effects are most severe. When rubella is contracted early in a pregnancy, there is a risk of miscarriage, developmental disabilities and several other birth defects, also known as congenital … Continue reading

Pregnancy After 40

There are definitely benefits to postponing motherhood. You will be more financially secure than 20 year old parents. There is research to suggest the child will do well also. Studies have shown that children of older parents tend to do well in school and are more likely to go on to graduate college. There are risks to pregnancy after 40. At this age, you are in the category that obstetricians call “advanced maternal age.” Not flattering in the least, but there are risks associated with pregnancy after age 40 that your doctor will be concerned with. One of the most … Continue reading

Paternity Testing in Pregnancy

For some women, there may be a question about the paternity of the baby. If this is the case, you may want to find out as quickly as possible. There is less risk to the baby if you wait until he or she is born. Unless there is an extreme situation that must be resolved immediately, it’s best for your baby to wait and take a blood sample after the birth. The two tests used to determine paternity during pregnancy are the amniocentesis and the chorionic villus sampling (CVS) test. amniocentesis can be done between 14 and 20 weeks. The … Continue reading
