The Truth About Your Diet During Pregnancy

One of the assumptions I made about pregnancy prior to becoming pregnant is I’d have a diet-related Get out of Jail Free card.  I knew that there are certain foods it’s best to avoid, but I thought at least I’d have a free pass to eat, well, not quite as much as I wanted, but to feel a bit more guilt-free about evening ice cream binges. That turned out not to be the case at all.  First off, the whole “eating for two” thing isn’t true.  At most, you should eat for one and a quarter.  In addition to that, … Continue reading

How To Avoid Oversharing Pregnancy Related Information

Social networking can be a great way to keep friends and family abreast of all things pregnancy – related. For one thing, it sure beats having to make phone calls to absolutely everyone every time key information (like baby’s gender) is found out, and worrying about whether you have remembered to call absolutely everyone lest you should forget and offend someone. The one drawback with social media is that there tends to be a lot of oversharing going on. How can you be the thoughtful pregnant woman who keeps all of her friends and family up to date with the … Continue reading

Pregnancy And Dreams

When you are pregnant, sleep does not always come easily. When you do get some rest, you may awaken to find that you had some very, very strange dreams while you were asleep. Strange dreams are par for the course during pregnancy, and it should come as no surprise that there is a connection between these dreams and all of those hormones that have flooded your system. In addition to an increase in the amount of dreams that women have during pregnancy, women are more likely to remember the dreams that they have while they are pregnant than they are … Continue reading

First Trimester Cravings and Smells

It almost seems to me that from the moment I conceive, my cravings and smells go into overdrive. Not to mention my acne. At least, that has been my experience in the past. With my first pregnancy, one of my all time favorite foods became something that made me sick. Cheddar cheese. I love cheese, and want it on pretty much everything I eat, so imagine my surprise when the pregnancy sickness kicked in, and the thought of cheddar cheese made my stomach churn. But, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, something I normally don’t care for all that much, became … Continue reading

Weird Dreams

Do you have weird dreams when you’re pregnant? I do. I don’t know why, but with both pregnancies, I seemed to sleep deeper and have more vivid dreams than normal. I am a poor sleeper in general. I always have been, so for me to have dreams on a regular basis, and remember them definitely signifies I am having some issues that I need to work out in my sleep. Think about it. When you find out you’re pregnant, there is such an emotional roller coaster. You’re happy one second, and freaking out the next. You don’t know what kind … Continue reading

The Pros and Cons of Testing Often

One of the big questions that comes up when we talk about home pregnancy tests is when you should test and how often. While it is a personal decision, there are both pros and cons to testing early and often. Here are a few: Pros: 1. If you test early and often you are more likely to catch a pregnancy in its very early stages. This makes determining your due date accurately much easier. It is also better if you are high risk. 2. Catching a pregnancy early on gives you more time to plan. You have more time to … Continue reading

Pregnancy Apps for Smart Phones

I’ve blogged about a few apps that are available for iPhones, but did you know there are many pregnancy apps for other smart phones as well? Android phones are becoming very popular these days and offer quite a few apps via the Google Marketplace. This month I had the thrill of test driving an EVO 4G for the purposes of trying out some of the pregnancy apps, courtesy of the generous people of Sprint. (Can I just note that I am in love with this phone and I’m already mourning having to mail it back this week? It’s a fun … Continue reading

Pregnancy Dreams: What Do They Mean?

When I was pregnant I kept having the most terrifying dream. I was on the delivery table in the hospital. Bright lights were shining down on me and the doctors and nurses were scurrying around as I prepared to give birth. I sat up enough to see the top of the baby’s head emerge, covered in dark hair. Suddenly, the child’s hands crept up around his head. The fingers had claws and he used them to pull himself out, exposing his monstrous face and gnashing teeth. He started biting me and growling, scaring the nurses and the doctors. One of … Continue reading

Birthparents from the show 16 and Pregnant Have Bittersweet Moments But No Regrets

The same People magazine issue (October 5, 2009) that told Katherine Heigl’s joyous adoption story also featured an update on the adoption featured on MTV’s reality show, 16 and Pregnant. Four months after Catelynn Lowell and her boyfriend Tyler Baltierra placed their daughter with adoptive parents in North Carolina, they are starting their senior year of high school in Michigan–and coping with bittersweet moments haunted by memories of the baby who Catelynn says looks like both of them. The couple are at peace with their decision, however. They decided to make an adoption plan for their baby soon after they … Continue reading

Music, Love and Labor

The first time I fell in love, I was sitting in a pile of overstuffed pillows underneath my dorm room loft. My husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, had watched a movie with me on my tiny TV and the credits had long since rolled. The pillow pile, a college budget attempt at a sofa, was our favorite spot. I threw on a CD, and while our favorite song played, I realized, “this is it… this is where I belong.” That song would be played again in front of all our friends and family while we danced for … Continue reading
