Pregnancy’s Affect on the Holidays

We realized as soon as we discovered that we were expecting back in March that this pregnancy would bring with lots of different changes and challenges. The inevitable anticipation of the high holiday season would be unavoidable impacted by my pregnancy. While we thought about the stress of preparing for the new baby and the holidays, I was concerned that I might not have the energy or motivation to even make preparations for the holidays in the midst of baby preparations. While I did not anticipate any complications with this pregnancy, pregnancies can be unpredictable especially the ultimate arrival of … Continue reading

Thanksgiving and Pregnancy Part II

Now that all my Thanksgiving preparations were complete and all my pies where baked, my family and I were ready to spend the day with our families. The first stop was to my parents house for a more intimate dinner. We headed over at around nine in the morning so that we could spend a good bit of time with my parents and siblings before heading over to my husband’s parent’s house. All but one sister were in attendance. I brought an “old fashioned” pumpkin pie for dessert and some freshly baked pumpkin bread as a breakfast/pre-dinner hors d’ oeuvre. … Continue reading

Pregnancy and the Holidays

In recent weeks and months I have turned my attention towards planning and preparing for the upcoming holidays. My nesting instinct seems to be in full force and is focused more on these holiday preparations than other projects that I need to complete before the baby is born (I still need to finish a couple of ballet paintings for the nursery and make the crib bumper!). Alas my mind is consumed with both Thanksgiving and Christmas plans; Christmas of course being the greater focus of the two. I began my preparations for Thanksgiving with the ordering of lard. This year … Continue reading

How to Enjoy the Holidays When You’re Pregnant

Ah the holidays… a time to take time off work, relax and enjoy your family. Who am I kidding? The holidays are probably the busiest days of the year for moms. It’s a confusing time for pregnant women especially. The abundance of food is tempting. Having two dozen family members commenting on the size of your baby bump is less than thrilling. The thought of not having to work and relaxing is great in theory, but oftentimes between all the visiting, baking, and celebrating, we end up more exhausted than we were before. My solution is actually the same regardless … Continue reading

Holidays with Family

This is the last one, I promise, on the subject of holidays. This time it’s looking at holidays with family. It could mean just taking your children on a holiday but I was thinking more of holidays with in laws or siblings or other family members. A lot of how a holiday with family goes depends on how well the family gets along and how comfortable and relaxed they are in each other’s company. If your spouse doesn’t get along well with your parents, or even if you don’t, then a holiday with family is not going to be the … Continue reading

Thinking About Announcing Your Pregnancy on Turkey Day?

John Milton said, “Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.” This time of year, those of us who are expecting have abundantly more to be thankful for, and what provokes “transcendent moments of awe” more than bringing a new life into the world? Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that does not center around gifts, but rather focuses on bringing family together and expressing gratitude for the things in life that matter. I can’t think of a more perfect occasion to share … Continue reading

Pregnancy and the Holidays

Once Halloween passes, you’ll see all of the Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations out in the department stores. This time of year is my absolute favorite, and last year I loved it even more! November and December are the “feast months,” full of parties, potlucks and big family dinners that will make you appreciate the fact that you can indulge a little bit. While “eating for two” is somewhat of a myth, it’s okay to splurge a little bit around the holidays. My OB noticed my extra weight gain in January last year, but I didn’t get in trouble! I’m sure … Continue reading

Fun Pregnancy Facts

I’ve scoured the world wide web looking for fun and interesting facts about Pregnancy to entertain you. Enjoy! Did you know… The number of cesarean births has risen to 27% over the last decade. That’s an increase of 40%! Cesarean risk goes up as women age, and with all the woman putting off children for their careers, perhaps this has something to do with the increase in c-sections? The average age for a first time mother is 25-29. It used to be 21 in 1970! I was 25, so I guess I fit the bill! My childbirth class teacher reported … Continue reading
