Choosing a Name: It’s a Tough Job

I think choosing your baby’s name is the hardest part of becoming a parent. When I was picking out paint colors for the nursery, I knew I could always repaint if I didn’t like it a few years down the road. When I was picking out a doctor, I knew I could always switch if he wasn’t the right fit. The next time around, however, I plan on going the extra mile by adding a little glamour. Anyone who has ever seen pictures of themselves after delivery knows how nice it would be to add a little sparkle to their tired face and the baggy hospital night gown, as well as the bland delivery room. First of all, I’m putting my sister on beauty duty. It will be her job to make sure my lips are … Continue reading

Jailed for Pregnancy? Not Likely

By now you’ve likely heard about Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo’s policy in Iraq for pregnant soldiers. Last month he listed pregnancy as a reason for court-martialing soldiers, meaning female soldiers who become pregnant while on duty in Iraq are not only immediately sent home, which is already standard policy, but could face jail time. This morning he backed off, saying he would never actually jail a pregnant woman, but was trying to make a point. Seven soldiers have already been punished under the new policy, receiving letters of reprimand. First of all, I understand his reasoning to a point: when … Continue reading

Pregnancy Will Make You Stronger?

There’s an interesting theory circulating the news and blogs this week. Professor Greg Whyte, a Professor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University recently stated that he believes pregnancy and childbirth can actually improve strength and joint mobility in women. Apparently scientists speculate that pregnancy hormones are performance enhancing for female athletes. Personally, I feel as though my abs have gotten a passport and left the country. I barely have enough stamina to get through the whole day without a nap. I definitely don’t feel any stronger. But, there is a list of female athletes who … Continue reading
