Pregnancy Stages: The Second Trimester

The second trimester of pregnancy includes weeks thirteen through twenty-four. You will begin to show during this time and most women start wearing maternity clothes at some time during the second trimester. You will become more aware of the baby's presence and feel movement at some time during these weeks. This varies widely among women, so don't get stuck on an exact week to feel the movement.

Many women find the symptoms of pregnancy subside somewhat in the second trimester. Some report this trimester is the most comfortable, since morning sickness has generally ended. Also, while the stomach is expanding, it isn't as large as it will get in the third trimester and there aren't as many discomforts.

Continue taking care of yourself by getting enough rest, eating well and exercising. Make sure you are getting enough rest. Although you are likely experiencing less fatigue, staying well rested is good for you and the baby. A healthy diet and regular exercise help provide the baby with nutrients needed for development, nourish you and help control weight gain.

Prenatal care during the second trimester consists of monthly visits to the midwife or doctor. During these visits, you will listen to the heartbeat and your health care provider will measure the height of the top of the uterus, called the fundus. The measurement in centimeters corresponds with the number of weeks in pregnancy. For example, at 30 weeks, it measures 30 centimeters.

About 70 percent of women will have an ultrasound in the second trimester. The main reason for this screening is to check the development of the baby to be sure everything is on track. In some cases, problems can be diagnosed, or ruled out, using ultrasound examination. Women who refuse the ultrasound do so for many reasons, including worries about sonogram effects on the fetus.
