Pregnancy Tests for Students?

Students in Port Chester, N.Y. may soon be able to get pregnancy tests at school health centers. The clinics, which are in the village’s elementary, middle and high schools, will offer both pregnancy and STD tests, as well as offer counseling and referrals to students who test positive for pregnancy or infection. The clinics are run by Open Door Family Medical Centers and Port Chester is the only school district in Westchester County to host the clinics. Currently, the federally funded program gives immunizations and physicals, as well as mental, vision and hearing screenings. In addition to offering pregnancy and … Continue reading

High School Girls make Pregnancy Pact

Several schools and education programs have been designed to address and help prevent teen pregnancies. However Gloucester High is facing something that I do not think anyone really expected or prepared for happening. The school in Massachusetts realized that there was a problem when an unusually high number of girls began visiting the school clinic as early as October of last year to take pregnancy tests. Some of the girls returned several times and actually even acted a little disappointed when they discovered that they were not pregnant. By summer vacation seventeen girls ages 16 and younger were pregnant. After … Continue reading

What Would You Like To Ask A Teen Mom?

This past summer I wrote about a series on MTV called “16 and Pregnant,” a show that follows the life of a teen throughout her pregnancy. Each episode depicts a different teen’s trials of dealing with relationships, high school, parents, jobs and becoming a parent. Now MTV is coming out with a new show, a sequel called “Teen Mom.” This series will depict the difficulties of young parenthood. I have had the privilege of previewing the show, which will first air next Tuesday night, and on Friday I’ll have the opportunity to interview one of the cast members. I would … Continue reading

Stupid Teen Stunt: Car surfing

What happens when a person is ejected from a moving car? Anyone? They get injured and maybe even die? So why would a teen stand on a car or sit on the back hood of a moving car? My guess is they have a death wish. Car surfing, the act of riding a car by standing or sitting on the top of the car instead of inside has got to be one of the most dangerous stupid stunts that a teen can do. Car surfing became popular among reckless teens in the late 1980’s when the movie Teen Wolfe portrayed … Continue reading

Should I be Teaching My Baby?

A recent question in the forums addressed the idea of prenatal education. This would be teaching your baby while still in the womb in the hope that one day her I.Q. will be higher. The poster wanted to know if this is true, so I decided to look into it a bit. The idea isn’t entirely new. When I was pregnant with my first baby, mothers to be were being encouraged to read to the baby. We actually did do that, but not with the idea of making her smarter. After all, she was OUR baby. She would already be … Continue reading

Choices for Higher Education

We now live in an “I want it now!” society. We can no longer wait on meals from scratch. McDonald’s is timing its service and Domino’s promises pizza in less than 30 minutes. Pregnancy tests compete for who can deliver the earliest response. Children cannot appreciate the value of a savings bond because of its delay in pay-off. The same is true with our education. Two-year colleges and vocational schools are becoming society’s most popular forms of higher education. More students are choosing two-year or vocational colleges over four-year universities. The schooling is shorter and the moneymaking is quicker. Some … Continue reading
