Our Fifth Prenatal Visit

Once again three weeks have come and gone and it is time for our fifth prenatal appointment. I do not have any major concerns going into this appointment and I am excited to see how my baby is doing! We arrive at the appointment a few minutes early. While we were waiting my husband took our son outside to run around and I collected my urine sample for the midwife to check once she was done with her other client. As my husband and son came inside the other pregnant mom was finished and leaving. The midwife checked my urine … Continue reading

Our Third Prenatal Visit

In the midst of birthday celebrations and baby shower planning, we had our third prenatal visit with our midwife. At eighteen weeks and five days, I am feeling really good and aside from my growing midsection, I feel like I am back to my old self with lots of energy and motivation. Our every-three-weeks visits seem to come quickly and meeting fairly often has many advantages. In three short weeks lots of things happened: I added vitamin D3 to my diet, I adamantly exercised five times every week without fail, I gained three pounds, I ate lots of protein, and … Continue reading

The First Official Prenatal Visit with Our Midwife

The first order of business was to find someone to watch our son. It just so happened that my fifteen year old sister had the day off from work. I picked her up from work the night before so that I wouldn’t have to worry about rushing around to pick her up in the morning in combination with our 9:30AM appointment. As we rushed around making breakfast and and coffee (mine is a decaf latte), we were finally ready to go. Once we arrived at the midwives home office, the paperwork began. First she when through her contract with us … Continue reading

Prenatal Vitamins (part II)

One doesn’t have to look very hard (especially with the Internet) to understand that pregnant women (and breastfeeding too) need to take prenatal vitamins. With the onset of the industrial revolution and the invention of chemical pesticides, our food just isn’t as nutrient dense as it used to be. This means that we are not getting all the nutrients that we need to be healthy. While being healthy should be an important goal for everyone, it is paramount for pregnant women. We know that a balance of nutrients are essential for expecting mothers. We also know that conventional foods cannot … Continue reading

Prenatal Vitamins (part I)

As soon as a woman discovers she is pregnant, she will most likely be advised by her doctor or midwife to take a prenatal vitamin supplement which may bring up a couple of questions: Why do I need to take a prenatal vitamin? Which prenatal vitamin should I take? Maybe you never bothered to ask these questions because your doctor or midwife simply told you to take “this specific prenatal” 3 times a day for the duration of your pregnancy (and while breastfeeding). I think most of us have enough common sense to be able to say that pregnant women … Continue reading

Do You Remember To Take Your Prenatal Vitamins?

I had a doctor’s appointment yesterday and he reminded me of the importance of taking a daily multivitamin, even when you are not pregnant. He said even if you are only taking a children’s chewable vitamin, it is really beneficial. It got me thinking about how diligent we are when we are pregnant. Does everyone remember to take their prenatal vitamin every day? If you are already in the habit of taking a daily vitamin, it’s probably no big deal, but I always had a hard time remembering. I am ashamed to say that I probably forgot to take my … Continue reading

Tips for Taking Prenatal Vitamins

As soon as you become pregnant, your doctor will prescribe prenatal vitamins. The nutrients in these vitamins are important for several reasons. If you are trying to conceive, you should start taking them before you get pregnant. One important nutrient in prenatal vitamins is folic acid. Folic acid has been shown in studies to prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Neural tube defects often develop before you know you are pregnant. This is why women who are trying to get pregnant are advised to start taking the vitamins. Folic acid is available in many food sources, such as … Continue reading

I’m a firm believer in supplements. Not because they are better than eating whole foods (they aren’t), but because since I’ve been tracking exactly what I eat, the areas in which I am lacking are now very clear. I take a daily prenatal vitamin. I’m neither pregnant nor likely to become so, but the prenatal contains folic acid that helps prevent the neuropathy that is common among diabetics. It still doesn’t cover everything. Though the jury is still out, I have found that my blood sugars are somewhat better when I am taking chromium piccolate. I was surprised when looking … Continue reading
