Bonding Moment with a New Baby

I hate to say this, but I was not excited about my second pregnancy. My first baby was only seven months old when I took the pregnancy test, and I was not prepared for another baby at home. I mentally ignored the fact that I was pregnant as my belly grew. It was a completely different experience than my first pregnancy, which my husband and I had planned for five or six months. My water broke at six am, and we headed to the hospital. I remember I was reading Eat, Pray, Love through the beginning of the labor. The … Continue reading

New Friends Next Door

After our most recent time spent with grandparents, uncles, aunts, and other close familiy members our son got used to being around other people. Luckily for him there was also a healthy dose of time he was able to spend with his cousin who is less than one year older than him. This close proximity in age was great. There is something different about seeing other kids. When we were vacationing with his grandparents we noticed a remarkable change in him towards wanting to do what the big kids were doing. If they were playing then he wanted to play. … Continue reading

Preparing Your Toddler For The New Addition

For her entire life, you toddler has had you all to herself. Depending on her age, she may or may not understand your pregnancy and what it means for your family’s future. Once the new baby is born, however, there’s no question her life is going to change. She may love it and become mommy’s little helper, but what if she has a hard time adjusting? How can you help your toddler adjust to being a big sister or a big brother and help encourage a strong bond between the two new siblings? It starts during your pregnancy, of course. … Continue reading

Toddlers and Vegetables

Is your toddler eating enough vegetables? If the answer is “no,” doctors say it’s more than likely because you are not consuming proper amounts of healthy veggies. According to a new study, only 32% of adults in the United States meet the minimum requirement for vegetable consumption? This, despite the fact that there are numerous studies, which recommend that Americans eat more vegetables. What’s more, researchers point out that toddlers learn by example and if mom and dad are not eating veggies, then there’s a good chance tots won’t want to eat them either. Or, in many cases, since parents … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: October 2008

If you had an October baby, congratulations! I hope that you will spend some time with us here at Families.com, as we bring you the latest news and tips for you and your family. Here is the Baby Blog month in review for October. October 1st Insect Repellent and Young Children Protecting my children is the number one priority, but one thing that I tend to avoid is insect repellent. I figure that putting additional chemicals on my kids is not the best idea, that is until now. These days, a mosquito bite is not just an annoyance, but it … Continue reading

Brother and Sister

When my husband and I decided to try for another baby part of our motivation was to give our son a sibling. He had (and has) a great temperament and loves “babies” (which is any child regardless of his or her age). We felt like our family was ready for another baby too. Even though I knew that our son would be a great big brother, I did have concerns about how they would get along. On his side of things, he has always had genuine love and concern for her well being from the moment he first held her … Continue reading

Cookies with Mommy

When I was pregnant with my second child, my husband and I had some concerns about how our son would handle sharing his time with us with his new baby sister. After hearing numerous horror stories about sibling rivalry, I wanted to find some ways to put aside some special time for just me and my son. I did not want him to feel like he was being replaced or that we loved his little sister more than we loved him. In many ways his baby sister has more needs that require immediate and consuming attention. Once his baby sister … Continue reading

Pregnancy Number Two

It became clear that our 18 month old needed a sibling. We had reached the point that we felt it was a good time to start trying for another baby. Largely, motivated by our son who loves “babies” and joyfully points out any baby he sees, it seemed that our son was also ready for a new baby especially since he has been practicing being a “good big brother” with a baby doll I recently found in a closet. He also had the opportunity to hold the 2 week old baby girl of a colleague and friend. He was completely … Continue reading

No Trantrums

My toddler is such a little helper. We’ve had a new baby in the house for the last month and Jessie is such a mommy. She is the best big sister. She is so gentle with Baby E. She is loving and genuinely concerned. Jessie loves her dolls and stuffed animals. She is always playing with her babies. Since Baby E has been in the house, she mimics how I am with Baby E with her babies. It’s really cute. I guess she couldn’t really remember how it was with the last infant to do the same things. Even though … Continue reading

More Car Seat Safety

On July 23 we welcomed a new baby into our home. She was a day old. I realize that I write about toddlers not babies, so you may be wondering why I’m starting this blog with Baby E, but she’s pertinent to the topic. We have a Graco Snugride infant carrier. I have transported four children in the seat. It’s a great and safe seat. Baby E was so small, though, that the seat’s lowest strap slots were above her shoulders and as tight as the straps would go were not tight enough. I got a Chicco Keyfit so Baby … Continue reading
