Returning Fertility

Lately I've been doing a lot of research about returning fertility. It is such an interesting topic and you will find many different conflicting opinions on the subject, especially when it has to do with moms who are still nursing their babies or toddlers. Some will insist that a mother must wean in order to conceive again. Others, especially those who strongly promote breastfeeding, insist that weaning is unnecessary and fertility will return when the body is ready. I also came across a third point of view, which has nothing to do with breastfeeding or weaning, and more to do with buying expensive fertility kits. These kits consist of natural herbs and supplements. One claimed to be some type of cleanse. The description sent shivers down my spine. If a colon cleanse gives you serial diarrhea, I don't want to know what happens when you do a fertility cleanse. Whatever it is, I'm sure I don't want to spend over $70 for it!

I also found quite a bit of good advice that can be applied to just about anyone. Have you ever noticed that although there are always tons of pills and special plans out there that make big promises, ultimately the one that wins out is the old tried and true? For weight loss, nothing works like good old fashioned diet and exercise. Well, it turns out the same is true for returning fertility.

Realize that it is not entirely in your control. You cannot tell your hormones what to do. Occasionally hormone treatment is necessary, but for most healthy women, that is not the answer. Your best bet is to set the stage for a health and happy pregnancy through (you guessed it) diet and exercise. Begin by taking a prenatal supplement. Sometimes iron deficiency is to blame for Aunt Flow's extended absence. Counter this with a good prenatal vitamin that has plenty of iron. Taking supplements when you are trying to conceive is always a good idea. Folic acid is most important in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before you even find out. Next, take care of your body, and in turn your reproductive system, by eating a healthy balanced diet. Talk to your doctor if you are not sure what you need in your specific diet. Finally, exercise helps to increase blood flow, decrease stress and lift your mood, which are all good things for conception.

Most women will be able to conceive again, even if they are still breastfeeding. Give yourself adequate time to conceive. If you have already weaned and it has been several months without a period, consult your physician.
