Happy News for the Royal Family Despite Illness

What wonderful news out of England, that Duchess Kate is now pregnant. She is early in her pregnancy, and is unfortunately experiencing a very severe case of a common early pregnancy symptom. Most of us are familiar with morning sickness, and many of us have experienced it at some point during our pregnancies. However, only about one percent of women will experience morning sickness as severely as Duchess Kate is now experiencing it. The scientific name for excessive morning sickness is hyperemesis gravidarum, or excessive vomiting during pregnancy. In case you are wondering what qualifies as excessive vomiting (after all, vomiting … Continue reading

The Holiday Season – More Than Just Christmas

For many families, Christmas Day is not the only celebration of the season. For example, in my family for as long as I can remember, Christmas Eve is a big deal for my dad’s side of the family. All of the aunts, uncles, and cousins gather in one place (my aunt’s house) for an evening of Chinese food, delectable desserts, general rowdiness, and plenty of gift giving and getting including a Yankee Swap. I consider it to be a can’t – miss event, and last year was the first time that we did not make it to Massachusetts for … Continue reading

How to Enjoy the Holidays When You’re Pregnant

Ah the holidays… a time to take time off work, relax and enjoy your family. Who am I kidding? The holidays are probably the busiest days of the year for moms. It’s a confusing time for pregnant women especially. The abundance of food is tempting. Having two dozen family members commenting on the size of your baby bump is less than thrilling. The thought of not having to work and relaxing is great in theory, but oftentimes between all the visiting, baking, and celebrating, we end up more exhausted than we were before. My solution is actually the same regardless … Continue reading

Do You Buy Your Baby Christmas Presents Before They are Born?

My son got Christmas presents before he was ever born. When I was five months pregnant, we celebrated Christmas with both sides of the family. I was tickled to open gifts from both sets of soon-to-be grandparents for my baby boy who was due in April. It was like a mini baby shower. He even got his own little stocking. The same weekend my dad got to feel my son kick for the first time, too. What a fun way to celebrate the holidays! Christmas is a fun time to celebrate your pregnancy and the newest member in your family. … Continue reading

What Makes Christmas, Christmas?

You could be forgiven for thinking Christmas is all about presents, food, family, Santa and all the other things the world pushes at us. On the radio recently the announcer said, ‘What makes Christmas, Christmas?’ He then went on to answer his own question and tell everyone, ‘Christmas is lights, family, food and loyalty points.’ Excuse me? None of those things make Christmas, Christmas. Now don’t get me wrong I enjoy looking at Christmas lights and I enjoy Christmas food. I love spending time with family, not just at Christmas but at any time of the year. But none of … Continue reading
