Thoughts on Pregnancy and Motherhood

Before you get pregnant, nine months sounds like nine days. In your first month of being pregnant, it feels like maybe nine weeks. But by your seventh month, it feels like it’s been nine years. And yet, by the time your baby is a year old, you’re ready to do it all over again, because it feels like it’s been a lifetime since you had a newborn in your arms. You spend the first eight months of your baby’s life trying to get her to move. Then you spend the next eighteen years trying to get her to sit still, … Continue reading

It’s Okay To Take The Couch

For many pregnant women, there comes a point when your bed no longer offers the same comfort and relaxation it used to. Lying flat on any surface for any period of time sounds horrifying, since you know getting back up will be painful and you won’t get much rest. Lying on your back is not recommended and lying on your side can result in throbbing hip pain. I found that the least uncomfortable position to sleep in was a slightly reclined, seated position. Since I do not have a recliner, I repositioned a few pillows on the couch to recreate … Continue reading

Too Much Lipase

My daughter rarely takes a bottle. My fulltime job is staying home and taking care of her, so there isn’t any need for her to get nourishment from any place other than me. Every once in awhile, however, I get curious about how she’d handle taking breast milk from a bottle. For about a month, I was pumping and storing milk in case of an emergency. I figured if something happened to me and I’d be unable to breastfeed her, it would be nice for her to have a little comfort from breast milk while she was slowly weaned off … Continue reading

Miss Sleeping On Your Tummy?

Technically speaking, there is really no harm in sleeping on your belly when you are pregnant since your baby is safely floating around in a liquid bubble that cannot be compressed. But, I doubt you’ll see any woman in her second or third trimester try it. Would you want to sleep on top of a beach ball? It’s far from comfortable! Some women are so used to sleeping on their tummy, though, that they find it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep in any other position. Personally, it took me months to get used to sleeping on my side. … Continue reading

Round Ligament Pain

This week I wrote about a condition called Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. Some chiropractors believe that round ligament pain may be an early symptom of SPD, indicating a need for adjustment. Like SPD, round ligament pain is responsible for a great deal of discomfort and suffering during pregnancy. The round ligament supports your uterus within your abdomen, keeping it in place. During pregnancy, the uterus grows both in size and weight. This added strain on the round ligament can cause it to become very long and thin. When the ligament pulls on the surrounding nerves and sensitive structures, severe pain can … Continue reading

Different Ways to Sit When You Are Pregnant

While the title may sound silly at first glance, anyone that has experienced the third trimester of pregnancy knows how big of a deal this is. Whether you’re at your desk or trying to watch a movie, trying to get in a comfortable position is no easy task. The simple act of sitting can leave you sore in places you never knew existed. You’ll also find yourself out of breath at times, which can be helped by changing positions. Leave your ego at the door; everyone will understand when they see you on all fours, trying to catch your breath. … Continue reading

Preparing for Your First Week as a Mom

As your due date approaches, concerns about how life will be after the baby comes are perfectly normal. Even if you have had a lot of experience babysitting other children, handling a newborn 24/7 and juggling motherhood with everything else can be a big challenge. Here are some things you can do to prepare: 1. Get plenty of rest. Resist the urge to stay up cleaning your house and sleep as much as possible during your last days of pregnancy. 2. Cook meals ahead of time. Prepare and freeze enough dinners to last you a solid week. You’ll be much … Continue reading

Surviving Your Last Weeks of Pregnancy: Sleeping Arrangements

You only have a few weeks to go until your baby arrives, and if you’re like I was, you’ve probably got six loads of baby laundry going through the wash for the second time, a list of 25 things for your husband to clean and organize, a wet mop in one hand, and a feather duster in the other. That’s in addition to the vacuuming, scrubbing, and organizing you did last night until 3am, right? Unfortunately, all that hard work and preparation commonly referred to as “nesting” is robbing you of precious sleep. Nothing is more important right now than … Continue reading

Surviving Your Last Weeks of Pregnancy: The Emotional Train Wreck

In addition to the physical discomforts, the last few weeks of pregnancy can induce episodes of anxiety, distress, sadness, and frustration. You may be anxious about waiting for labor to begin, delivery itself, or becoming a parent for the first time. Aches and pains affect your ability to deal with the emotional ups and downs. The body goes through another wave of hormone changes in preparation for labor and delivery, which can make mood swings worse. Going through false labor can have you ready to pull your hair out! Sometimes normal fears are inflated by outside influences, such as when … Continue reading
