Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

When I was pregnant with my son, I experienced severe pain in my pelvis. I could hear and feel clicking in my pelvis while walking, especially if I was stepping backward. At times, the pain was so bad, I could not roll over in bed and it was very difficult to walk. I often had to lean on a counter or find peculiar ways to sit to relieve the pain. I told my husband it felt like I had the jaws of life crushing my pelvis! I did a little research and I found my my symptoms matched the description … Continue reading

Hip Pain and Sleep

I had the worst hip pain during my pregnancy. It got so bad, that at one point, I couldn’t leave the house. Whenever I walked, I could hear this clicking sound that felt like it was coming from the center of my pelvic bones. It was really hard to cope. The worst part about it was trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in. It was nearly impossible. I finally found a few tricks that helped alleviate the pain enough to get some rest. The first trick I tried, which worked until I got too big to maneuver the … Continue reading

Maternity Support Belts

Add wearing a maternity support belt to my “list of things to do next time” for pregnancy. A good friend of mine has been suffering from so much discomfort lately and her doctor recommended she wear a maternity support belt. She told me that she was in so much pain on the way into the store that she could barely walk, but on her way out (she put on the belt right away), she felt immediate relief and had no problems returning to her car. If I knew those belts were that effective, I would have bought one myself! There … Continue reading

All Roads Lead To… Rest

After going through one pregnancy myself and witnessing the pregnancies of several of my friends, I’ve come to the conclusion that although there are a few exceptions, nearly every complaint leads to the same advice from our doctors or midwives: get some rest. If pregnancy were some illness that did not result in a beautiful baby, no woman would sit back and take nine months of pain, discomfort, nausea, and a whole host of other irritating symptoms. There would be an entire corner of the drug market dedicated to pregnancy and its ailments. Yet, because we are supporting the growth … Continue reading

Advantages of Pregnancy

There are many advantages to being pregnant, and I’m not talking about the adorable bundle of joy you get out of the deal. For the six months or so that you are visibly pregnant, that belly is like a free spin, the wild card, a “get out of jail free” card. You can get through crowds. Pregnant woman can part the red sea (or a crowd) simply by saying “excuse me.” As soon as one person sees you are expecting, it’s a domino effect and everyone gets out of your way. This is particularly useful when you are trying to … Continue reading

Round Ligament Pain

This week I wrote about a condition called Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. Some chiropractors believe that round ligament pain may be an early symptom of SPD, indicating a need for adjustment. Like SPD, round ligament pain is responsible for a great deal of discomfort and suffering during pregnancy. The round ligament supports your uterus within your abdomen, keeping it in place. During pregnancy, the uterus grows both in size and weight. This added strain on the round ligament can cause it to become very long and thin. When the ligament pulls on the surrounding nerves and sensitive structures, severe pain can … Continue reading
