The Seventh and Eighth Weeks Post Partum

Seven weeks out from my daughter’s birth, I seemed to have hit a bit of a rut. While I am still feeling great, my sweets intake has increased due to recent celebrations and my motivation to exercise seems to be dwindling a little bit too. My diet started veered off course when I put together a party for my daughter’s baptism. I made the famous red velvet cupcakes. They were both tasty and calorie heavy especially with the cream cheese frosting. After that I made my thanksgiving pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread, using the sweet pumpkins I had processed and … Continue reading

Pregnancy’s Affect on the Holidays

We realized as soon as we discovered that we were expecting back in March that this pregnancy would bring with lots of different changes and challenges. The inevitable anticipation of the high holiday season would be unavoidable impacted by my pregnancy. While we thought about the stress of preparing for the new baby and the holidays, I was concerned that I might not have the energy or motivation to even make preparations for the holidays in the midst of baby preparations. While I did not anticipate any complications with this pregnancy, pregnancies can be unpredictable especially the ultimate arrival of … Continue reading

The Day After Thanksgiving Part II

All of our Christmas treasures were packed neatly and carefully away last year with anticipation for the Christmas seasons to follow. Inside were coordinating red, green, and gold globes, snowflakes, and bird ornaments; along with strings of lights, festive garlands, personalized stockings, gift boxes, wrapping paper, ribbon, and stocking holders. Given our new and different space and layout, the decorating will require some creative ingenuity. Without a fireplace and mantel, we will have to find a different location to hang the stockings and the garland. Our living room is much smaller so we were mindful not to get a tree … Continue reading

The Day After Thanksgiving Part I

We had some big plans for the day after Thanksgiving, none of which involved “Black Friday” shopping. I was very tempted to sleep in but I knew that we had better things to do with our day than sleeping until noon! After tagging our Christmas tree six days previous, I had planned for our small little family to drive out to the tree farm and bring our tree home. I thought it would be best if we got started quite early, but it was not so easy getting my “night shift working husband” to awake. So I took our son … Continue reading

Thanksgiving and Pregnancy Part II

Now that all my Thanksgiving preparations were complete and all my pies where baked, my family and I were ready to spend the day with our families. The first stop was to my parents house for a more intimate dinner. We headed over at around nine in the morning so that we could spend a good bit of time with my parents and siblings before heading over to my husband’s parent’s house. All but one sister were in attendance. I brought an “old fashioned” pumpkin pie for dessert and some freshly baked pumpkin bread as a breakfast/pre-dinner hors d’ oeuvre. … Continue reading

A Day of Thanksgiving Preparation

The day has finally come when all my research and recipe testing, as a pregnancy task/urge, will be put to use for some good “old fashioned” Thanksgiving pies! It is an epic journey of sorts, especially at thirty six weeks of pregnancy. I am a perfectionist by nature and pregnancy has only increased my need to do things in the best way possible. Pies have been a long time hobby of mine, although in the past few years I have not had much occasion to bake them. After acquiring a tub of lard (rendered from chemical free pig fat), my … Continue reading

Week Thirty Six

The weeks are really flying by now. The count down is in high gear. Thirty six weeks, for whatever reason, seems to be quite the milestone. With one month of pregnancy left, I really have a lot to get done if a few short weeks! Day one of week thirty six was on Thanksgiving. While the festivities were wonderful, I started my week with a less the perfect diet and no exercise! Hopefully, everything balanced out in the end. I did get in five days of exercise for week thirty six; the pumpkin pie and bread was absolutely delicious! On … Continue reading

The Pregnant Women

There are several pregnant women in my extended family. Yesterday I attended a baby shower for one of these pregnant women; she is my husband’s cousin’s wife. Aside from my sister who very recently gave birth to her first child, a girl; there are a total of three expectant mommies on my husband’s side of our extended family. It is not uncommon for sisters and sisters-in-law, and in our case cousin-in-law, to be expecting around the same time. When I was young, my mother was expecting at the same time as five other sisters and sisters-in-law. What is interesting is … Continue reading
