First Thanksgiving Part II

On thanksgiving day, my daughter awoke from her nap to find herself in an unfamiliar house with lots of unfamiliar faces all around her. She was not a fan of this particular situation. Initially when anyone got too close to her she, she would start bawling and would find the fastest route back to me. Realizing that she was not going to put up with me being in a different room, I took up residence on the living room floor while she played with some toys and her cousin (she was fine with the other baby everyone else was terrifying). … Continue reading

First Thanksgiving Part I

Last year on thanksgiving I was thirty six weeks pregnant with my daughter. I remember going to our family get togethers and feeling quite self conscious of my enormous pregnant belly. My daughter missed out on last year’s thanksgiving by three weeks, but this year she most certainly made her presence known. She began her first thanksgiving giggling and playing on the bed waking me up from my slumber. She very decidedly let me know that she was done sleeping and wanted to go downstairs. Apparently she was really hungry because she ate twice as much egg yolk than she … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Is For Family Fun

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and that means family time. For the genealogist in the family, it is a great time to hear family stories, both new and old, get the group together for some family photographs, and as always, listen for new family history facts that you can include in your research. You are probably even going to enjoy some of your family’s favorite recipes. This Thanksgiving, our Thanksgiving table will have something on it that is not usually a part of our menu. Because of where Thanksgiving ended up on the calendar this year, my son’s birthday cake will be … Continue reading

4 Things I Have Learned in Preparing for Thanksgiving

Last minute trips to the grocery store. Deep cleaning areas in the home that family will be gathering in. Hoping nothing has been forgotten. Figuring out what needs to go in the oven when. It’s all part of the Thanksgiving preparations. Depending on how well prepared you are, it could be a stressful next couple of days or smooth sailing. Here are some things I have learned over the years when it comes to reducing stress during the holiday season. The first is to enlist the help of family. Year after year I would be getting the home ready, complaining … Continue reading

Is Your Business Ready For Holiday Shoppers?

Today I began to wonder whether I had missed Thanksgiving. I went grocery shopping at my local grocery store after returning from a vacation, and everything is ready for Christmas. There are Christmas decorations on the store windows, Christmas displays on the shelves, and Christmas music too. I remember a time when stores used to decorate for Thanksgiving, but I saw no sign of that today. In fact, the only things that hinted that it is nearly Thanksgiving were the great prices on frozen turkeys and the end cap displays filled with stuffing mixes, canned pumpkin, and other Thanksgiving must … Continue reading

Store Hours for Black Friday – 2012

It’s time to make your plan of attack for Black Friday. Several stores have released information about when they will open their doors and what some of their big deals will be. Here’s what I’ve been able to discover so far. Use this information to help plan out where you will go to first on Black Friday. Staples is opening it’s doors at 5:00 in the morning on Friday, November 23, 2012. Their Early Bird Specials will last until noon (or while supplies last). Walmart will start it’s Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day, and will open its doors at … Continue reading

An Important Family Outing Part I

We did something very special this weekend, something that I did not think we would do this early. After receiving a flyer in the mail to remind us of the important outing that needed to take place, I knew that we needed to go as soon as possible. Without hesitation we made plans to find and tag our Christmas tree at a local Christmas Tree Farm! We went to this same tree farm last year but we went a few weeks before Thanksgiving. Most of the tree were already tagged by the time we went. While we found a decent … Continue reading

Saving on Holiday Decorating

I’m not much of a holiday decorator when it comes to my home. In fact, there are only two holidays in which I do, the fall season and Christmas. This is the time of year in which I break out the scarecrows. Mr. Bob (yes, I named him) is my favorite. He is my largest scarecrow that sits on our porch. I also have a few pumpkin decorations that grace my home as well. I keep it neutral. In other words, it isn’t about Halloween or Thanksgiving. It is more of a “harvest” look, so that way I can keep … Continue reading
