The Importance of Pregnancy Support Groups

If you’re pregnant and feeling uncertain, or even if you feel great about pregnancy/childbirth, I still have an important recommendation: try to find a support group.  Not necessarily one called “pregnancy support group,” but try to find a group of other veteran, new, or expecting moms to spend time with. The support that’s offered just from spending time with others in the same boat, or who have been through it recently, is invaluable.  A lot of the weird things about pregnancy can be less alarming if you have others to talk about them with, who can say: “oh yes, that … Continue reading

First Thanksgiving Part I

Last year on thanksgiving I was thirty six weeks pregnant with my daughter. I remember going to our family get togethers and feeling quite self conscious of my enormous pregnant belly. My daughter missed out on last year’s thanksgiving by three weeks, but this year she most certainly made her presence known. She began her first thanksgiving giggling and playing on the bed waking me up from my slumber. She very decidedly let me know that she was done sleeping and wanted to go downstairs. Apparently she was really hungry because she ate twice as much egg yolk than she … Continue reading

An Important Family Outing Part I

We did something very special this weekend, something that I did not think we would do this early. After receiving a flyer in the mail to remind us of the important outing that needed to take place, I knew that we needed to go as soon as possible. Without hesitation we made plans to find and tag our Christmas tree at a local Christmas Tree Farm! We went to this same tree farm last year but we went a few weeks before Thanksgiving. Most of the tree were already tagged by the time we went. While we found a decent … Continue reading

FDA Considers Regulating DNA Testing Kits

Those DNA test kits that you can buy from a website sure look tempting. Genealogists often find them interesting because they can learn more about their ancestors based on the analysis of their DNA sample. Many people use these tests to learn more about their health risks. The Food and Drug Administration is considering putting regulations in place regarding these direct to consumer DNA kits. You may want to wait a little longer before purchasing one. In some cases, doctors will recommend that a patient have genetic testing done. The purpose may be to determine the risk a couple has … Continue reading

Adoption Education for Teens

Last blog, I shared that few teenage mothers place their children for adoption. I believe many do not do so because of common myths about adoption. Many people do not understand that in domestic adoption today, a birthmother can choose the family she wants to adopt her child. She can choose a family most like hers, or most like the one she wishes were hers, in terms of religion, family structure, rural or urban location, beliefs about education and discipline, and more. Many people also do not understand that birthmothers in the U.S. seldom go through their lives wondering if … Continue reading

The Election of the Untested and the Untried

Subtitle: What Exactly Qualifies You to Be President? Other than being 35 and a natural born citizen, there are very few qualifications for being President of the United States. At a tutoring session this spring we asked our middle school students what you had to do to become president, what type of experience you need and they replied that you had to have a college degree. And kids (how else are you going to deal with teen pregnancy?) You don’t need lots of money, they said, but you do need a rich daddy. One girl quipped: “You need some acting … Continue reading

The pregnancy blog covers issues related to fertility, pregnancy, birth and the post partum period. I try to cover a wide variety of topics each week.
