More Car Seat Safety

On July 23 we welcomed a new baby into our home. She was a day old. I realize that I write about toddlers not babies, so you may be wondering why I’m starting this blog with Baby E, but she’s pertinent to the topic. We have a Graco Snugride infant carrier. I have transported four children in the seat. It’s a great and safe seat. Baby E was so small, though, that the seat’s lowest strap slots were above her shoulders and as tight as the straps would go were not tight enough. I got a Chicco Keyfit so Baby … Continue reading

ACOG Resolution Against Home Births

Home birth has gained media attention in recent years. The reason is that more women are staying home to have their babies. The film advocates … Continue reading

Adoption Considerations when you Already Have Children: Safety

When you already have children, your adoption decisions will have to take them into account as well. In my last blog I mentioned the effect that spacing of children and adopting out of birth order can have on your family. This blog continues the discussion of things to think about when planning for second or subsequent children. When you consider age and special needs of the child you can adopt, and when you consider the referral of a specific child, you must consider your responsibility to the children you already have. First, you must consider safety. A child who has … Continue reading

Unassisted Childbirth

Unassisted childbirth, also called freebirth, is when a woman gives birth at home with no midwife present. Often the woman’s partner or another family member is present, but no medical personnel. The stories of unassisted birth are not the scenario we typically envision where the birth takes place in the car on the way to the hospital or after a very short labor at home. These women are giving birth at home, without any medical assistance on purpose. This movement is growing in the United States. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 7,000 babies were born unassisted in … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: October 8 – 14

How is the weather where you live? Does it feel like fall or do all these autumn articles feel a little out of place, considering it still feels like summer in many areas? I find myself having a little trouble really getting into autumn, especially on days when it’s in the 80’s and 90’s. It seems as if it’s going to start cooling down now, and then it may begin to feel a bit more like fall. Not that I’m complaining about the beautiful weather, not at all, it just makes it a little harder to realize that we really … Continue reading
