Time Flies When Someone Else is Pregnant

Why is it that everyone else’s pregnancy goes by so much faster than your own? I don’t know about you, but my pregnancy seem to last forever. By the time I got the the end, I could hardly remember what it was like to feel normal. On the flip side, when my friend was pregnant, despite the fact that she lived a few houses down and we talked all the time, it seemed like she was pregnant for one month. Once you have your baby, it’s the same scenario. I feel like I have been a mom for years and … Continue reading

Time Goes By So Slowly

As my son’s first birthday approaches and I look back on my first pregnancy, the whole nine months, in memory at least, feels like nothing more than a blip on the radar screen. In the final weeks, I recall feeling like I had been “pregnant forever.” I remember actually saying that on more than one occasion. It seemed to last indefinitely when I was waiting for it to end. A year has faded the memory a great deal, but all it takes is a glance at past blog entries I wrote during my pregnancy to remember how much it dragged … Continue reading

Help For a Flagging Quiet Time

Does your quiet time need revival? Maybe it needs a complete overhaul? Maybe it needs resuscitation. Here are some ideas to help you revitalize your quiet time or as I call it communion time, since it is the time when I commune with God and He communes with me. Focus first, on putting yourself in God’s presence by remembering who He is. Maybe focus each day on a certain attribute of God. E.g. love, justice, mercy, faithfulness, or power and praise Him for this. Or you might focus on the names of God and exactly what they mean to you … Continue reading

Food Labeling Law Goes into Effect… Sort Of

We’ve survived contaminated spinach and hunted down possibly contaminated tomatoes. Here in the United States, we finally have protection in the form of federal food labeling laws… right? As of September 30th, many types of meat, produce, and other foods will be labeled with country of origin. But not all foods. Some types of food will be exempt from the labeling laws — foods that are processed (like roasted peanuts), foods that are mixed together (like frozen veggies or salad mix), and meats that are breaded (like chicken breasts or fish filets). The idea of country of origin labeling has … Continue reading

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Reinvents Himself – Part I

We have a WWE clock in our garage that my husband has had for at least eight years. Every once in while when I am coming in from the car, I heard The Rock say “Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?” In case you haven’t noticed, what The Rock is cooking up is a new image for himself. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has gone from WWE superstar to movie star in a small amount of time and very successfully, I might add. He is even getting a new name – his old one. If you look at the … Continue reading

French Onion Soup

After numerous gatherings with lots and lots of food, I often go on what my husband calls a soup binge. Binge really isn’t the right word for it, but it’s true that after holidays I tend to like overly simple meals. Can you blame me? After all that cooking and entertaining and being entertained, it’s time to lighten up a little. Therefore, I offer up this version of French onion soup. Some historians say it was created by King Louis the XIV when he only had margarine and onions on hand. I’ve actually studied French history extensively and I have … Continue reading

Another Shedding Season is Upon Us!

Although domestication has changed many automatic behaviors in pets, it hasn’t quite gotten rid of the hair problem. Spring and fall, many pet owners find themselves wading through a river of fur as old coats call out and new ones grow in. My parents joke that their long-haired chow mix Becca leaves tumbleweeds of shedded hair in the hallways. Shedding can be a much bigger hassle with a pet with long hair! But it’s no picnic with short haired dogs like Moose and Lally, either. Moose tends to shed all year… at least a little. It gets more noticeable in … Continue reading

Mr. Meow and Tabby: How Goes the Positive Reinforcement Training?

If you’ve been following my what to do about Tabby dilemma regarding the way she treats Mr. Meow, you’re aware that I’ve been looking for new ways to help them get along. One of those ways was trying to use positive reinforcement. Maybe you’re wondering how that’s working out. To be honest, it’s been working. Sort of. Mr. Meow is still skittish if Tabby’s around. Coaxing him out into her presence so I could reward the both of them has been an obstacle. But we’re getting there. The Sun Room For some reason, the sun room is the one place … Continue reading

The Philadephia Story (1940) and High Society (1956)

You’re getting two for one today. “High Society” is a musical remake of “The Philadelphia Story,” and the two movies are so similar, I thought I’d just review them side by side. The basic story is as follows: Tracy Lord, an aristocratic divorcee, is preparing for her second marriage. Her ex-husband, C. K. Dexter Haven, is a loveable lout who is still in love with her. He’s made no secret of the fact that he’d like her back, but she’s too stubborn to even talk about it. Tracy’s father has been philandering with an actress, and if the story gets … Continue reading

If Courthouse Research Isn’t Full Time, Why Bother?

This is a mini-series on becoming a courthouse researcher. If you haven’t heard of that job before, or if you missed the first part of this series, make sure to start reading here. Otherwise, read on! In my last blog, I talked about how courthouse research is not a full-time job, except in rare cases (either the researcher is willing to cover lots of territory to get their 40 hours in, or the researcher happens to live in a very large city that doesn’t have a researcher already covering it, which is very rare.) Some people may say, “Well, if … Continue reading
