Pet Obesity Rates Still Climbing

The trend I first wrote about two years ago is only getting worse. Pet obesity rates continue to rise in America, and unfortunately that’s not all. Not only are once-healthy pets gaining weight, ones that are already obese continue to put on the pounds. Cleveland’s Fox 8 profiles the epidemic. The Association for Pet Obesity recently ran a study that concluded 25% of cats and 21% of dogs are overweight. Those numbers are slightly up from the last study (and the last article I wrote on the topic) in 2010. As already mentioned, one of the most worrying parts of … Continue reading

A Healthy Mouth and a Healthy Pregnancy

When it comes to your health, everything is connected. Your body is a system, and when one part is not well, symptoms show up throughout the rest of the body. When you’re pregnant, your baby’s health is affected as well, and that is why it is so important to do everything you can to stay healthy. That includes getting enough rest, eating a balanced diet, exercising and talking to a doctor when you think something might be wrong. Your teeth are no exception. A Collection of Cat Toys

As impressive as the collage of cat toys to the left might be, it’s only a small representation of the entire collection of cat toys my cats claim. (Wayne’s decided if we’re looking for ways to cut money in case of a depression, cutting out my pet toy spending is a place to start. Sadly, he’s probably right.) But the purpose of this blog isn’t to show off my cats’ impressive collection of cat toys. Rather, it’s to discuss the names they know their toys by. (As I wrote in another article, I’m big on naming things.) See if you … Continue reading

Have a Baby, Lose a Tooth?

“Have a baby, lose a tooth” was a common saying in our grandmothers’ day. During your pregnancy, you may hear this from an older family member. Is it one of those pregnancy myths or can it be true? This depends on who you ask. Some believe it was true in the old days, but modern dental care has taken care of the problem. Others are staunch believers in this saying. A recently released medical study looked at this issue. The study was conducted by New York University and The Yale School of Medicine. Researchers looked at a nationwide sampling of … Continue reading

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease — a bacterial infection of the tissues and bones that support the teeth. The gingiva is a fancy name for the gums; gum disease that spreads below the gum line is called periodontitis. Periodontitis is more severe, causing gums to recede and making teeth loose. Plaque in the mouth contains bacteria that can irritate the gums and cause tissue to break down. If you don’t remove plaque by brushing and flossing, plaque can spread below the gum line or harden into tartar on the surface of your teeth. Risk factors for gingivitis … Continue reading

Oral Piercings and Oral Health

A piercing in your lip, tongue, or check can come with some health risks. An oral piercing can take as long as two months to heal, so be sure you care for it properly. Here are a few basic care tips: Avoid alcohol while healing. Avoid spicy foods while healing. Avoid hard and/or sticky foods while healing. Don’t smoke or use tobacco products while healing. Brush your teeth after every meal. Rinse with a mouthwash after every meal. Rinse your mouth frequently with warm salt water. Talk to your body piercer and/or dentist if you have any problems.
