Birthday Pictures: What to Know Before They Blow

My daughter’s last birthday was one to remember. We celebrated with dozens of family members and friends at my parent’s home in Hawaii and appropriately enough my daughter chose a “Lilo & Stitch” theme for her party. By the end of the night I had snapped more than 200 pictures (I know… snap happy parents unite) and once I had a chance to view the images, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they turned out—-especially the ones that featured her blowing out her birthday candles. If you are the parent of the birthday child you know how chaotic it … Continue reading

Tips For Taking Pictures With Your Camera Phone

I must preface this blog by stating that I am not an advocate of camera phones. Which is not to say that I don’t think the technology is phenomenal and the convenience unparalleled. However, the sacrifices that are necessitated by trying to pack so much into such a small device obviously compromises way too much for me to rely on a camera phone to capture important milestones. Now, that doesn’t mean that I don’t know many people who own camera phones and use them in the same manner that I do my Canon Rebel. Some of my closest friends use … Continue reading

Family Travel: Taking Your Children To A Strawberry Farm

I was going to title this blog “A Trip To The Strawberry Farm—A Parent’s Survival Guide,” but I didn’t want to send the wrong message. Yesterday my 3-year-old daughter and I finished off the last two pieces of a very tasty strawberry rhubarb pie. It was a pie we made together with the fresh strawberries we picked earlier this summer at our local berry farm. (I froze a few pounds and have been adding them to recipes throughout the summer.) Nothing says summer than fresh strawberries, right? That was my thinking about two months ago when I loaded my daughter … Continue reading

Tips for Taking Great Birth Pictures

The birth of your baby is by far one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Of course, you will want to take pictures to capture the event. Whether you take pictures throughout labor and birth or wait until baby arrives to start shooting, you will want to get the best shots possible. Getting great pictures requires some thought and planning. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and forget to take pictures. I’m living proof of that theory. Out of four babies, we only managed to get a picture of one with the midwife shortly after … Continue reading

Creative Pregnancy Portrait Ideas

I have seen some really cute pregnancy portraits lately. It’s got me thinking about what I might like to do next time around. I did the cliché heart-on-the-belly photo, the daddy-holding-the-bump photo, and the classic stand-by-the-crib shot. I tried (and failed) to take a similar photo every week to track my growth. I really want to be more diligent next time; and I really want to be more creative by capturing both meaningful and humorous elements of pregnancy. Here are some of my ideas: From the sibling’s perspective: imagine a shot taken at eye level with the big brother or … Continue reading

Capturing Kids in Action

When I look at photos that were taken of me when I was a child I notice that there were not many action shots. While I realize that it wasn’t as easy to take action photos with dated film cameras, I still wonder why there were not more candid photos taken. My old photos seem to always feature me holding something or standing beside something, and it’s obvious they were all posed. It’s too bad because some of the best photos are ones taken when the subject isn’t aware the camera is shooting him or her. I wish my family … Continue reading

Getting Ready to Shoot the Fourth

It doesn’t get more American than a Fourth of July BBQ with friends, family and fireworks. The ultimate summertime holiday is teeming with amazing photo ops from flags to family reunions, parades to pie eating contests. It would be a shame not to make the most of these Independence Day events. So grab your camera, charge up those batteries, go out and splurge on a new memory card (or extra rolls of film) and get ready to snap your loved ones in action as they proudly celebrate our country’s 232nd birthday. Fourth of July Parade I addressed the challenges involved … Continue reading
