Our Third Prenatal Visit

In the midst of birthday celebrations and baby shower planning, we had our third prenatal visit with our midwife. At eighteen weeks and five days, I am feeling really good and aside from my growing midsection, I feel like I am back to my old self with lots of energy and motivation. Our every-three-weeks visits seem to come quickly and meeting fairly often has many advantages. In three short weeks lots of things happened: I added vitamin D3 to my diet, I adamantly exercised five times every week without fail, I gained three pounds, I ate lots of protein, and … Continue reading

Prenatal Vitamins (part I)

As soon as a woman discovers she is pregnant, she will most likely be advised by her doctor or midwife to take a prenatal vitamin supplement which may bring up a couple of questions: Why do I need to take a prenatal vitamin? Which prenatal vitamin should I take? Maybe you never bothered to ask these questions because your doctor or midwife simply told you to take “this specific prenatal” 3 times a day for the duration of your pregnancy (and while breastfeeding). I think most of us have enough common sense to be able to say that pregnant women … Continue reading

Do You Remember To Take Your Prenatal Vitamins?

I had a doctor’s appointment yesterday and he reminded me of the importance of taking a daily multivitamin, even when you are not pregnant. He said even if you are only taking a children’s chewable vitamin, it is really beneficial. It got me thinking about how diligent we are when we are pregnant. Does everyone remember to take their prenatal vitamin every day? If you are already in the habit of taking a daily vitamin, it’s probably no big deal, but I always had a hard time remembering. I am ashamed to say that I probably forgot to take my … Continue reading

Tips for Taking Prenatal Vitamins

As soon as you become pregnant, your doctor will prescribe prenatal vitamins. The nutrients in these vitamins are important for several reasons. If you are trying to conceive, you should start taking them before you get pregnant. One important nutrient in prenatal vitamins is folic acid. Folic acid has been shown in studies to prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Neural tube defects often develop before you know you are pregnant. This is why women who are trying to get pregnant are advised to start taking the vitamins. Folic acid is available in many food sources, such as … Continue reading

The Insurance Policy (Part I)

I mentioned in a previous blog posting about my midwife’s “Insurance Policy.” This really has nothing to do with policy coverage, hospitals, or insurance companies; this is a different kind of insurance policy. With her extensive experience as a nurse midwife, she has seen time and time again the value of her insurance policy as she attends to expectant mothers. Her insurance policy is based on maintaining optimum health, which is something EVERYONE should be concerned about. This is how she can almost guarantee a healthy mother, a healthy baby, and a complication free pregnancy and delivery. My midwife’s insurance … Continue reading

DHA Supplements

When I was pregnant (almost two years ago now, has it really been that long?), I remember sitting in my doctor’s office and talking about my health habits. He recommended a prenatal vitamin and then he handed me a free sample of a prenatal with DHA. Honestly, I can’t remember what he told me about it, but I do know that I went home and tossed it in the cupboard and never touched it. I was already taking two vitamins a day; I didn’t think I needed to add another to the mix. DHA? It sounded so foreign to me, … Continue reading

Product Review: Bellybar

I never turn down the chance to sample food (grocery store samples, anyone?), so when the makers of Bellybar asked me to review their product, I jumped at the chance. They sent me three Bellybar Boost snack bars in Baby Needs Chocolate, Berry Nutty Cravings and S’more to Love, and four DHA chews in Chocolate Cuddles and Citrus on Board. The Baby Needs Chocolate Bellybar was really tasty. It definitely satisfied my candy bar craving. S’more to Love was also very good; I loved the tiny marshmallows on top. Berry Nutty Cravings has a sweet and smooth yogurt coating on … Continue reading
