Unusual (but Good!) Advice for Pregnant Women

by Kim Neyer | More from this Blogger

I picked up a few good pieces of advice here and there when I was pregnant, and now I'll share them with you! From cooking to posture to underwear, pregnancy requires a little modification to your usual routine.

Cooking Safety

Watch your tummy when you're cooking dinner, especially if you have a gas range. It's easy to get too close to the flame when you're not used to how big your belly is. If you're baking, keep your shirt clean by wearing an apron to prevent your belly from picking up ingredients like flour off the counter top.

Posture

Avoid reclining, since consistently leaning back can cause your baby to swing around into posterior position, making labor potentially longer and more difficult. Try leaning forward in a backwards chair while resting your arms on the chair back while you watch TV instead of reclining on the sofa.

Track Milestones

Don't have time for a pregnancy journal? Keep a separate calendar just for pregnancy milestones. The cheap purse sized ones are perfect. Jot down ultrasounds, first kicks, symptoms, etc. The next time you're pregnant, you'll appreciate being able to compare right down to the week!

Stock Up On "Granny Panties"

Sufficient square footage is necessary when it comes to post-labor lingerie. You need a tent to house those hospital maxi pads and you certainly don't want to ruin your good underwear. Ignore your husband's raised eyebrows and flaunt those high waisted drawers. You just went through labor, after all!

Forget the Saltines

A better defense against nausea is protein. Since chicken, meat and eggs make a lot of women even more sick, the easiest way to get that extra protein is through whey powder in your fruit smoothies. Not only is the ice cold smoothie soothing for your unstable tummy, the protein will help fight morning sickness more effectively that carbohydrates.
