What is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a condition in which the endometrial tissue, or lining of the uterus, is growing inside the muscle layer of the uterus, rather than inside. This muscular layer is called the myometrium, which is where the name of the condition originates.

Adenomyosis is most common in women over the age of thirty five. The main symptoms of the condition are painful and heavy periods. The symptoms are similar to those of endometriosis, a similar but unrelated condition. In endometriosis, the uterine lining grows on the outside of the uterus and surrounding organs. However, with this condition, the pain can start days, or weeks before the period starts. In some cases, the pain can last all month.

Although the exact cause is unknown, there appears to be a link between developing this condition and having prior trauma to the uterus. This can include pregnancy, c section, tubal ligation or a previous abortion. In rare cases, it can occur in a woman who has never been pregnant.

The theory is that these procedures cause the barrier between the endometrial layer and the muscle layer of the uterus to be broken. This allows the endometrial tissue to enter the muscular layer of the myometrium.

Treatment varies, depending on the symptoms and the individual woman. In some cases, drugs to suppress the estrogen level and pain relief medications may work. In severe cases, a hysterectomy may be needed. This is the only way to permanently cure the problem, prior to the onset of menopause. Adenomyosis will naturally disappear with menopause.

This condition can have a profound effect on the woman's ability to conceive and carry a child. If she does conceive, she is at greater risk of ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. This doesn't mean that pregnancy is not possible after a diagnosis of adenomyosis. It is a tougher road, but it has been done.
