What to Expect: Artificial Insemination

The world of fertility treatments can be intimidating and stressful for couples. You’ve been evaluated by the doctor and told you need artificial insemination. You may worry and wonder what will happen. Our first child was conceived with the help of this procedure. I remember feeling very nervous and unsure during that first cycle. Often, women take fertility drugs early in the cycle of the insemination. Depending on the cause of your infertility, you may be given oral or injectable fertility medications. The doctor will monitor your eggs with transvaginal ultrasounds to determine how many eggs are developing and the … Continue reading

What is Artificial Insemination?

If you have been trying to get pregnant without success, you may visit an infertility specialist. One of the methods used to help women conceive is artificial insemination. Unlike other reproductive technologies, this is not new. Artificial insemination has been around for a few hundred years. It has been used regularly since the late 1800s. Artificial insemination is one of the least invasive ways of helping a couple conceive when intercourse isn’t enough. Basically, the man’s sperm is artificially placed in the woman’s body by a doctor. The procedure results in a greater number of healthy sperm. As my doctor … Continue reading

An Introduction to the Pregnancy Blog

Hi Everyone, My name is Pattie and I’ve been hired to write the Pregnancy Blog on Families.com. Introducing Animalle Mundo: A Doggie Love Hotel

Christmas might be a holiday for familial, not romantic, love, but with this notice you might have the time to start planning so your pet can have its romantic getaway.  That’s right, a romantic getaway for your pet.  If you’re trying to breed your dog and you want to do it in style, consider Animalle Mundo Pet.  It’s a hotel in Brazil, one that keeps in tradition with the country’s ritzy amorous motels.  The New York Times reports. You can find short-stay hotels all over the world, but Brazil is a leader in both having them, and in making them … Continue reading

Michael Jackson’s Family Tree

The family of Michael Jackson has been in the news lately. There are plenty of news articles speculating what the future of his three children will be like. Many news articles have been about the trial of Michael’s doctor, Conrad Murray. I thought it would be interesting to take a look at Michael Jackson’s family tree, since he is still very much in the public eye. Michael Jackson’s mother is Katherine Esther Jackson, and his father is Joseph “Joe” Walter. Katherine and Joe had a total of ten children. Maureen Reillette Jackson, “Rebbie” was born in 1950. Sigmund Esco Jackson, … Continue reading

What To Expect…. in a Movie?

If you’re reading the pregnancy blog here on Families, I’ll bet you that you’ve also read the well known book, “What To Expect When You’re Expecting.” It’s a staple on every pregnant woman’s reading list. After all, the book sums up just about every symptom and milestone of pregnancy, and it comes with its own online community. I used to keep it at my bedside during my pregnancy so I could stay up late reading about what was supposed to happen to me next. I was always surprised by how accurate the book was! It just goes to show you … Continue reading

Encouraging Panda Repopulation

There are less than two thousand giant pandas living in the wild. What’s worse is that pandas are notoriously difficult when it comes to breeding. They are shy about getting together, and can have real trouble conceiving. At the National Zoo in Washington D.C., two resident pandas recently attempted to mate. Yay! But it didn’t work. Boo! So the zoo officials artificially inseminated the female, Mei Xiang. Yay? Last year’s artificial insemination attempt did not take, but zoo staff is hopeful that this year’s attempt will be a success. (Mei Xiang already has one cub, so here’s hoping for a … Continue reading

Boost Your Chances of Conception?

The study was conducted on intrauterine insemination treatments. Twenty-seven percent of women who lay down for 15 minutes after the procedure went on to have a baby, which is pretty good compared to the seventeen percent who got up and moved around. The evidence supports the commonly held idea that lying still will give sperm a fighting chance. As I was reading about this study, which was conducted in the UK, I naturally began to wonder if this same principle really does apply to “natural” attempts at conception. I’ve candidly discussed positions before on this blog, and concluded that it … Continue reading

Angelina Jolie “Creeped Out” by Mother of Octuplets

She is the celeb mom, who many believe Nadya Suleman is trying to emulate, but movie star Angelina Jolie says the California mother of octuplets freaks her out. According to news reports, Jolie’s exact words were, “totally creeped out.” That’s how Brad Pitt’s famous domestic partner reportedly feels about Suleman, the now-infamous mother of six who just gave birth to eight more children — all thanks to artificial insemination. I haven’t spoken to Jolie, but I would guess her remark has something to do with the fact that Suleman reportedly underwent plastic surgery to look more like her big screen … Continue reading
